I agree it is a bit too colorful for me as well. The brick is very pink/red so I don't think the original shutters and door worked with it very well...but it was better than this new explosion of colors. Before & After: Brightly Painted Porch & Front Door Color Color Therapy |

Absolutely gorgeous in every way...you really know how to make great use of the space and it lives really "large"! Love your son's grouping of watercolors on the wall that set the tone for the family room--what a wonderful way to make your space even more meaningful. Incredibly well done!! LOVE dark floors but they just aren't compatible with dogs. Even with keeping claws properly trimmed, the darker the floor, the more scratches and dings stick out like a sore thumb. I have friends that have dark floors and they show every smudge and speck of dust as well. As much as I like them, they wouldn't be worth it in the long run... Floor Show: Ebonized Dark Wood Floors |

I have a three cat household and have tested and tried it all. Obviously, the tigher the weave the better, but it really all boils down to the individual cat(s). While Ultrasuede seemed like a no-brainer, and it didn't tear or shred, it did show actual fine markings in the fabric from clawing that never came out (like someone had raked a fork across it). Plus true Ultrasuede can be very expensive. I have also tried various faux Ultrasuedes (aka microfibers) that were so-so but claws can still penetrate a lot of them. I've tried velvet, which worked pretty well but is a fur magnet. However, with a great vaccuum attachment it comes off easily. For me, that coupled with slipcovers (but NOT the kind that stretch to fit) have been the best options. For a great book on decorating with pets in mind, try "Animal House Style" by Julia Szabo. When I worked for a furniture store a couple years ago, I purchased a rolled arm sofa style like this made by a company called Lee Industries. (www.leeindustries.com) They used to (and still may) manufacture a lot of the sofas sold through Restoration Hardware. One of the things I liked about the company is that you can customize their sofas by choosing the number and type of cushions, or you can order the sofa upholstered or with a fitted slipcover. The company keeps archives of their slipcover patterns so, even if the sofa style is ever discontinued, you will always be able to order a slipcover if you want to. They also now tout that they manufacture "earth friendly" upholstery, although I'm not sure of all the specifics. Hope this helps and good luck! Sources For a English Rolled Arm Sofa?
