A fan really shouldn't be doing this to your energy bill! My roommates and I would often have three fans running at a time in my apartment and the energy bill never came to more than thirty dollars a month.

Perhaps you are using an older fan? I have just never heard of this happening, I don't see why a fan would use more energy than any other electronic device you could use as an alternative.
