Who cares what that door is? I bet this is an example of a landlord who chopped up a tenement into individual units, and Luke's space is what used to be the hallway to the other rooms of the unit.

I knew a man who lived in something similar where his bathroom and toilet was shared with the other tenants and down the hall.

So Luke doesn't have running water. Big deal.

What I see here is really really tiny - far tinier than I'm personally comfortable in. But it's got a sense of design, it's got consistency in the overall look (albeit spartan) and for that, I think it's a commendable effort and well worthy to be in this competition.

And to the person who commented to the Brazilian poster about living in a part of the world where there are 4 seasons, did you notice that Luke lives in NYC? If he can live within his 78 sf with his winter outerwear and what have you, then your comment kind of doesn't hold up does it?

Thanks for featuring this. I am Singaporean and moved back there after living in Brooklyn for 15 yrs. Been back for 2 yrs and am still pleasantly amazed by how many parks we have here, and how well they are maintained. There are also "park connectors" running through the city that link many of the parks together via footpaths & bike paths. For all the hustle and bustle of the city, it's nice to see how the Parks Board makes it a point to keep green space sacred here.

@ gargo -- yup that's right - it's illegal to have even an empty plant pot sitting on the fire escape in NYC. that said, i used to put potted plants out on my fire escape when i lived in a west village shoebox back in the day. i'm a fan of everything here except the zen garden - legal issues notwithstanding. I'm sorry. I just hate astro turf way more than I hate having an unused fire escape.

Where's the pop of colour? So you're saying the moment these computers go to sleep or get shut down that the room reverts to monochromatic minimalism?

I too have a hook by the door that's solely for keys and my dog's leash & collar. When I do leave the house without her (much to her chagrin ha), I always make sure I stop at the door before I exit and take a look at the hook to make sure the keys are not still hanging there. When I come home, I pull the keys from the door and onto the hook they go. I've not had a problem with that method since.

Another proud owner of the R&B Parsons bed here. I actually moved halfway across the world a year and a half ago, and that bed is currently resting in my friend's basement, but I love it so much I'm planning to have it slow shipped over as soon as I get a permanent place. The bottom slats are metal, built to slot into their own predrilled holes along the bottom side rails. No screws to install. Once they're in, that bed is STURDY. WHat's nice to is that they're I believe made by a small steel welding family in MN.

I moved from an apartment with horrid white marble tiles with light grey veining - it never showed up dirt, but you could FEEL the grit under your bare feet. So gross.

I currently now live in a studio with wide planked hard wood floors stained a very dark dark brown. It shows every strand of my dog's fawn-coloured fur and every speck of dust, but for some reason, when I walk on it, it doesn't feel dirty.

I guess for me, if it looks dusty, but it doesn't feel gritty under bare feet, it's the lesser of two evils.

Um. Because even veterinarians and doctors sometimes don't know everything.

But yes, harmful if placed directly onto skin, or if the concentration is so high that it just stinks up the whole place. The lot in Mrs Meyers products likely won't be an issue - just don't spray anything directly at cat!

I too use vinegar for everything - a half vinegar/half water/plus a few drops of lavender essential oil spray bottle is always on hand. I use it to clean floors, counters, even my toilet/bathroom. Works wonders. And baking soda/vinegar is used to clean baked on schmutz from baking trays etc.

I always pack books first. I hate packing, and putting away books is easy enough, then when I look at the empty shelves, it *feels* like I've accomplished a lot, ha! When in reality, I've only... tackled the books.

I have very few belongings, but I've learned the art of packing - have enough of the same sized boxes, don't use boxes that are too large because they will be too cumbersome to lift and stack away in the corner while you tackle the rest.

I've downsized recently - me and my 60 lb dog have moved into a 250 sf studio. Once we got in there, I put all the loose ends into the same green Ikea boxes so everything looks NEAT despite the small space. And once we have to move again (in a couple years, hopefully, I would be able to buy), it'll be an easy move out.

Good luck and congrats on the new space! It all sounds lovely. I think if I HAD to live in LA, I'd probably like Silver Lake best.

I use my Pyrex containers to brownbag my lunches into work. I also have these Slom glass jars from Ikea that have airtight lids. (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40065867)

you can't stick em in the oven or microwave but I don't use a microwave anyway so that's fine.

WOw nice. I just moved into a new apartment where the only closet is a standalone veneered "maple" monstrosity, and apart from that, the previous tenant's kid stuck two stickers on two of the doors that could only have been designed by a fan of Brick from Anchorman - they read "I love robe". Um, okayyy. I'd love to try something like this. Can I ask how the edges were attached to the doors? Did the person glue down teh front surfaces and wrap the edges around the back and staple down?

I live in a 250 sf space in the tropics so rewearing clothes is NOT an option with one exception: the cargo shorts and tank I wear when I take my dog to run in the park every morning. I will wear a set for a few days (stinky! I know! but the dog doesn't care!) and after each wearing, I fold and hang over the side of my laundry basket.

I always did hang up my clothes tho. When you live in small apartments all your grown up life, you tend to learn how to be neat... ;-)

I agree with Sugarbakers.

I used to live in a large loft apartment that we cut up, and my room was a mere 12 x 13 ft but with 12 ft ceilings, and one side was all window. I needed to put my desk/books/clothes/bed/hangout spot in there, so what I did was to build a second level along one half of the room. It was approx 12 ft by 7 ft and with just enough headroom for me (5'8"). I built a ladder with deeper steps so it was not quite a stairway but more than a ladder.

I used 4 x 4 posts along the ends and the middle, joists every 12 inches, supports etc. I drywalled along the middle posts to cut up the bottom into half. One half I turned into a tiny tiny squeeze in closet (not large enough to consider walk-in, but a skinny person could get inside). The other half by the window I purposed into a homeoffice area - I built in an L-shaped desk along the posts and built my own bookshelves.

I placed my tv above in the lofted area so I could watch Conan late at night, ha! Then on the ground level on the other side of the lofted area, I turned into a little lounge area with floor cushions and my music collection.

If it wasn't the fact that winters were colder than a witch's teat in that room (no heater, so I used a space heater) and that one of my two loftmates turned into PsychoBitch, I would have lived there a lot longer than the 4 yrs I was there. I was quite happy in my cosy little room.

In one of my previous moves, the night I signed the lease, I went in there to measure the living room and bedroom. I then drafted out the room outline in a grid diagram in illustrator and made coloured blocks to represent my furniture pieces. I shifted the blocks around for different layouts and picked the best one.

I managed to get the key two days before the lease start and official move-in date, so I went in there two evenings in a row to scrub the floor and all the windows and paint the living room and bedroom. I stretched the work over two nights, and doing it in an empty apartment just made it so much easier.

Love shepherd's pie. I like to fry a few strips of bacon and crumble them in the top of the filling before I lay the mashed taters, then sprinkle the top of the taters with some breadcrumbs (don't know why, I like the toast flavor along with the taters...)

Oh and I sometimes use chunks of chicken breast instead of beef or ground turkey. It's kind of like chicken pot shep's pie or something like that. I do prefer using fresh veggies to frozen (with the exception of peas) - I find frozen veggies have this strange taste and texture...

Such a sweet and happy home! I have absolutely no beef with Ikea... I think in the right setting, with the right amount of "living in" you miss the Ikeaness of the pieces. All you get is a beautiful cohesive happy home. I love this tour! I'm hoping to buy a small place sometime next year, and I'll be furnishing a lot of it with Ikea as that's all I can afford - I only hope I'll be able to accomplish what you have here. Except my dog is blonde. :) Thank you for sharing.
