the elements I see make me think of the late 60s - the art and the egg shaped thing whatever it is - so I am going to guess the 70s for interior design. The late 60s /early 70s.

Pink's my colour and I've been lusting after the blankets for a long time now ... Pick me!

I used to come to AT every day, all day, and now only come back occasionally. Part of the change in habit is due to a shift in personal focus, but mostly because AT started to seem somewhat commercial to me, a place where "inspiration" translated into "consumerism" and product. The house tour square footage got larger and that went against what brought me to AT in the first place. (I found AT through a "small space" google search.)

On the positive side, AT Europe is wonderful and I think separating the kitchen, nursery and tech sites is a good step forward. It makes room for AT DC (maybe?) and brings the focus back to saving the world one room at a time.

This is what I love about AT and what keeps me coming back to the site. Small and beautiful city space, well considered and functional.

In some caribbean countries, certain colors are supposed to ward off evil spirits.

In the Dominican Republic, back in the 1970s when I lived there as a child, I was told that the dictator Trujillo had owned the paint factories and made it law that people paint their houses. For that reason, some houses only painted the front and not the sides and back.

Following Preston's train-of-thought ...

As we switch over to non-plastic shopping bags, what should we use for throwing out the trash? Are there brands on the market that decompose more quickly than those we use to carry home our groceries?

If so, then maybe we should make our shopping bags out recycled material that breaks down quickly and take the trash bags you purchase off the market. That way people would be forced to recycle/reuse what they have.

Probably not a real solution but a different approach.

We have a space like that in my building here in DC. When I was in NYC last week, I noticed a giveaway spot in the apartment building where I was staying.

Carrier: I like the exposed brick walls, light and feeling of open space in the most recent catalog. I don't remember the previous pics. What appealed to you in them?

The interior space photographs in the PB catalog is starting to look better - more urban - while the West Elm space is starting to look plain and uninteresting. anyone out there agree?

Pixie: I just read your question about the Gap on the previous thread. I heard about the possibility of Gap going into the space not long after the building went vacant. I heard about the bank from a friend of mine who knows a developer in the city. Not sure if any of the information is valid. It's a great building with stain glass windows at the top of a wide staircase and I'm sure more than one business can fill the space. I don't know why it's taking so long!

The Pixie of Miss Pixie's is very easy going. I bought an orange armoire from her recently - yes, orange! - and she and her white-collar assistant as she likes to call him - delivered to my door and helped me figure out the best place to put it. It's a great addition to my apartment, especially in terms of storage and height.

Rosie ... I hear there's a So Fine Fabric store in Old Town. I haven't been there yet so call first to make sure they have what you need.

I am looking forward to the Target store in Columbia Heights (and am glad it didn't turn out to be a Walmart or KMart) and like very much what's happening in Friendship Heights but worry about the influx of chain business in the District, especially in Adams Morgan.

The Foot Locker that took over when Comet closed down made me sad and I hear yet another bank ... and maybe even a Gap ... is scheduled to go into Pixies old building on Adams Mill Road. We need more creative and original shopping options in the District as well as the welcome Trader Joes, Targets and higher-end department stores.

just my opinion ...

I went on a bike ride, made pasta for lunch and plan on walking down to the Whole Foods on P Street for a week's worth of groceries.

Those people who have it all together may put on a good front, but often times they have a REALLY good support system.

I'm going to NYC next week and am now quite aware of the potential bed bug problem! I asked my host very delicately if I should be concerned since the word was that it had been a problem in her home within the last year. Turns out she had to get rid of everything and buy new furniture! Should I consider the problem resolved or take any precautions against a potential infestation?

I'm all for guts and change in design. I don't know how I would feel if it were in my 'hood but from this distance, I like the pink building.
