How high are your ceilings? If you could build a small sleeping loft for yourself, over the living room or even kitchen, depending on ceiling height, your son would have the bedroom while he is young. Share the bedroom closet, and use inexpensive ikea pieces for toy storage, etc. The living room becomes your work/live space. Good luck! I hope to see your place on small cool by next year!

I love that you stripped the legs, and the shape of the settee is adorable. Not my personal taste, but well done on tackling a project on your own!

Your neighbor probably believes his property extends further, and that's why he is continuing to maintain it. In TX, if you maintain/improve upon a piece of property for ten years without anyone else contesting ownership, you can claim that property through adverse possession. It's always a good idea to be aware of your actual property boundaries. Good Luck!

I would be campaigning to live here were I still 8. I tried to convince my parents I could build a small complex, with outdoor patios connecting small living spaces like this outbuilding, and we could be "neighbors." It didn't fly, something about being 8, lack of insulation against a CT winter, I don't remember all the details. I am literally turning green with envy over this adorable place!

well done! I think it looks beautiful but I want to see the ENTIRE apt completed! I'm probably the most impatient person in the world and actually groaned out lout when I realized it was only the kitchen being revealed. Can't wait to see furnished, staged, beautiful pics of the whole project!

If you carpaint, you need to be prepared to spend a couple nights outside the apartment. The paint will let off fumes for at least a week. I had a master bath and built in closet situation painted in situ, with car paint, and it was gorgeous, but completely unlivable for a week or so. Totally worth it in the end, just don't forget to factor in that potential cost!

I used black leather look contact paper to cover an old IKEA PS locker looking cabinet. I love it and have been surprised by how well it has stood up. Definitely a quick/inexpensive DIY.

I tend to overestimate my abilities and would probably attempt to do them myself anyways, they really don't look that difficult. Jenny at Littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com has some really good tutorials for tufting and it is not as difficult as it seems. If you do decide to get it done professionally, definitely shop around. Find someone who can furnish examples of their work, and definitely don't settle on the first place you ask. Don't live with slipcovers! You will ultimately just be frustrated that your room's never look finished or quite right, if you decide to live with temporary fixes(they always seem to last longer than temporarily at my house:)).

I agree with talby, I have never seen a framed or mounted display that looked very sophisticated. I would either stick them in an album and be done, or maybe (and the sophistication would be wholy dependent on the execution) you could use them to make a light fixture.

I am thinking you could create something along the lines of zettel'z 5 chandelier http://www.ylighting.com/ing-zettel-z5.html using a monochromatic collection of your ticket stubs and the Ikea Maskros pendant light as a base http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90147465/. Good Luck!

i had a great outdoor couchy type thing like in #5, made from pallets and cushions covered in outdoor fabrics. It was so comfortable and really made the balcony an extension of the living room. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of it last summer, after the pallets caught fire in our extreme TX drought conditions. It sucked, luckily renters insurance covered the damages but it's an unnerving feeling. No one had even been on the balcony that day! No more wooden patio furniture for me!

I did the almost exact same thing a few weeks ago! I had a large shabby chic style sofa and chair that just did not suit my style anymore, but I knew I couldn't afford something of the same quality so I kept hanging on to it. I randomly walked into Salvation Army and found the sofa of my dreams, for only like 100 bucks and decided to go for it and I love it. The difference it makes to the look of my apt is overwhelming and just makes me happier in the space. I too am having trouble selling my old sofa on craigslist however. I am going to give it another week and then donate it back to Salvation Army. I wish they had a trade in system haha.
