I was thinking the same as Ketzel. But if you don't want or need a breakfast bar, you could just treat it like another wall. Put a counter height bookshelf against it, and decorative storage baskets on the counter. Or, depending on the floor space, maybe an overstuffed chair, side table, and reading lamp (I see there is an outlet there.)

I would build in a large floor to ceiling entertainment center that would completely hide the staircase. That way, you can position your seating on the opposite wall and still have a view of the fireplace. The entertainment center could also include a lot of extra storage for DVDs, games, books, etc.

Wow...many of these are shockingly pricey. Seriously? $1000 for a storage bench???
