And this year, I've asked for one of those panda mini-washing machines for our tiny house.

My brother has a long narrow country lot that goes down to a river in the back. We gave him and his wife some good radio walkie-talkies, so they could talk when one is down by the river and the other is up at the house and needs something. They're still using them several years later and they like them so much they gave us a pair back. They're great for roaming around at flea markets and when we go camping.

I had that problem with my vegetables over the past few years, and last year treated it aggressively with a baking soda/water solution sprayed a couple times a day. It works pretty well if you catch it early. And don't water at night, like someone else said. If a plant is too far gone, take it out and dispose of it. (Don't compost.) I haven't had a problem this year, but we'll see how it goes in July. The best preventive has been cutting out late day/evening/night watering.

I use it in vegetable soup. I happen to like it anyway, but my husband, who isn't crazy about it straight, loves this soup.

Our friends have one and it's a real treat to get to swim there. The water feels soft and buoyant and your eyes don't sting. I can spend hours in it. That's a nice-looking one in the picture. If I ever installed a pool, that's the way I'd go.

Update: we got a used comfort sleeper sofa, with that queen-size Tempurpedic mattress. At first we were only using it when my stepson was with us, but we both realized we slept better and felt better in the morning, so now it's our full-time bed.

I have a closed pile too, and get grubs from time to time. Never worried about them, cause they come and go. But I'm glad to know what they are, now.

As for ants, we used to have a terrible problem with them in the summer, especially when the big ol' fig tree started dropping figs. I started sprinkling diatomaceous earth around the yard for flea control for the dog last year, and we haven't seen an ant since. I've never heard of it being an ant control method, but it seems to have done the trick.

I live in LA in a little old house that catches cross-breezes beautifully and is shaded by a huge tree in the morning. But even then we need an AC for the really hot days. We tried it without for two years and it's a no-go, especially when that non-stop midsummer heatwave kicks in.

In NY for 10 years, I had another breezy place shaded by trees (lucky!), and got by with a busy ceiling fan, and weekend trips OOT when I could snag them, although there were some pretty hot miserable days.

But if I owned a house, I might try something like I encountered in a coastal hotel in Italy once. They had deep awnings, tile floors, ceiling fans and steel shutters. The tile stayed fairly cool and the room was shaded until about 2 pm, when the town shut down for a siesta anyway. Then you'd close the shutters on the outside and nap til 4-ish. The room was very comfortably cool. Don't know that my schedule would permit the napping, but I was surprised at how effectively the system worked.

I'd love something like this, but it looks like it's only for overseas markets. I wonder if you could run it in the US with a converter?

The only thing I would love more in this rental house than a dishwasher is a washer-dryer. I'm getting increasingly grumpy about the lack of both.

Love my husband, love to snuggle, but I'm a light sleeper and he's a hot, snoring, thrashing, sleep-talking cover-stealer. He actually kicked and broke the window by our bed in the middle of the night once. We're also in a tiny place that can really only fit a full-size mattress. I can tell when he's about to thrash out cause he trembles first and the mattress shakes, so I can usually stop him, which I do, cause I don't want to fix another window. I wear earplugs and run a air filter at night, which seems to help a tiny bit with his snoring. And I keep one extra blanket on my side. But I long for the day we can get an at-least queensized Tempurpedic mattress.
