Adapt or die.

I'm sure AT can get along without NYT content. I'm not sure NYT can get along much longer, period. Certainly not as it is now.

ooh_food rents, which means she will likely have to put the door back on when she leaves, and it would be easier to do this if the hinges remain on the frame if she is not a person who hangs doors frequently and has the technique down.

I know she rents because I'm industrious enough to click on the appropriate link from her Flickr photostream, rather than cry about it here. Just as I'm observant enough to notice the hinges facing on the living room side, which means the door would swing outward. No further explanation necessary.

hejiranyc,

Quite true, though every so often when a toothbrush surfaces that may have been used by JFK it goes for $12,000 on auction. Objectively speaking, JFK was not a very good president, but people have become caught up in the 'Camelot' mythology and what he once represented... so people still buy shit with his face on it. Perhaps Obama will, in the future, not so dissimilar? Hence, people using his face to sell dinnerware.

Home Depot sells one for under $100. It is not listed on their web site, but I have seen them both in Canada and the U.S., and I have one sitting in my living/dining room. It does not stretch quite as far as the real thing, but it's pretty nice looking and quite cheap.

I think minimalism as a design strategy is a lot easier to pull off when you have a ton of space. Is that counter-intuitive?

saltyc,

A comment like yours appears in almost every tour in which the featured apartment receives criticism.

I suspect that many ATers, if given the chance, would love to submit photos of their homes for this site. The only chance they have to do so, as far as I know, is during the "Smallest, Coolest" and "Fall Colors" contests. Otherwise, editors glean house tours from people they know and occasionally a user solicited via Flckr; this is often the case with the Spring Cure campaign, for example.

I for one would be happy to show my apartment along with my criticism. I guess I will have to wait for another contest to come along to do so.

Not.

1. Top-left corner: why paint half the duct-work? Either paint all the way to the ceiling or leave the duct-work white, but don't do half the job.

2. Why choose colors that contrast/conflict with the color of the beautiful brick wall? You barely notice the brick, focusing so hard on the contrast between the pine cabinets and the green walls.

3. The green competes with the pine cabinets rather than compliments them; both are popping out, demanding your attention rather than either receding to allow the other to shine or working in concert.

4. The orange chair and yellow walls aren't the right color for the cabinets, floors, or brick wall.

I like it, but unless my eyes deceive me why not submit pics without the photo enhancements? In any case, one of the better entries I have seen in the East.

I agree with the folks above; an excellent submission and a damn shame if it doesn't get into the next round. I think its interesting that you and Brett (Brooklyn, East) have the two nicest homes in the contest thus far and they're both rather small. Proof that when you do not have much room to work with, you make wise decisions editing down your stuff. Good luck, Noodle!
