You already mentioned a grey, but that would almost be too sad, as the light is really lovely. It's kind of obvious that you really want to paint, so I'm throwing this out there, and don't poo-poo it before you check out all shades. I'm suggesting a *really* light, not grey/not too colorful - lilac or lavendar. People really forget that all shades og purple are actually neutrals, in that there's a little bit of the whole color wheel in there. A light lilac/lavendar would tie the yellow, the brown etc together. Keep it below the trim though, the extra white abpve the trim would be fab, and you need it in that small space.

Do yourself a favor and find small swatches that match the yellow, brown etc, and buy some test paint and pick the one that disappears the most behind those colors.

Turquoise would make it really spunky! Maybe too spunky? If you go for it, aim for a turquoise more in the neighborhood of Tiffany-blue.

Otherwise, looking at the colorscheme I noticed a big, fluffy towel, on the top to the right. It's a lavender-ish color. In my opinion, it's also a neutral, and would tie your colors together nicely.

The brush we use for manual dishwashing.
I've heard of some people dishwashing their sunglasses too.

Whoa. Am sitting in my apartment at my dining table, browsing AT. I see this. I look down. I am sitting in that chair! I tell you, come to Denmark and buy this stuff. Dime a dozen I tell you.

With that color of wood, I actually like stainless steel for the counter and backsplash. A more modern feel, since another material might be more folksy teamed up with it.

The family is selling the place now so they can have more space for their three kids. Pictures at the real estate agent's:

It is normal for fridges in Denmark to be so small. People are used to energy costs being high, and opt for small appliances, cars etc. I shop once or twice a week, and it's fine for me and my family of 4. Why stuff your fridge with stuff you may end up throwing out anyway? Also, believe it or not, a lot of people store beverages like sodas and beer outside to keep cool.

Ooooh, this has been such a big deal. I live in Copenhagen, and can truthfully say, while this may epitomize modern state of the art Danish design/architecture, this is far from how typical people live.

The woman is an architect and the firm she and her husband own designed this. They are now selling, so they can live in something a little more suitable for a 3 kid family.

I have blogged about this, and given a video tour of my own pad in Copenhagen, a little more typical if I say so myself:

No mention of candles? Those really heat things up!

And remember to use your curtains/drapes. Besides being decorative, they actually insulate drafty windows.

WAIT! You don't mention which direction the rooms face.

Rooms facing north, east, northeast need warm colors, ie gentle off whites with ochre, or something more bright perhaps.

Rooms facing south, west, southwest can tolerate grays, light blues etc much better than rooms facing the other directions. Keep that in mind so you don't end up living in a cave.

That's a great concept! Though I think people in an emergency would benefit more greatly from a more soothing color than red.

I've always done this! It's best if you the kind of paper that already has those tiny squares on it. Then you say that each square is 10 inches or whatever, and you take it from there. A good way to spare your back and legs before moving stuff around!

I agree on covering the brick. I would paint it something lighter as well. The mantel too. Also, the lamp is a bit too high, like the other things mentioned. A shelf or two behind the chair with books would be a nice touch. And a small side table between the chair and the wall. You definitely need a little area rug too. A little foot rest wouldn't hurt either, inviting someone to sit at your feet by the fire perhaps?

Agreed! Spouse and I are masters of packing light. We managed to take our two small kids (6mos and 2yr) to France by train (from Denmark) with only one bag. We're doing it again, this time all the way to Morocco.

Remember, most everything you "need" can be acquired at your destination or along the way. If you really need it, that is. Requiring there are other humans there of course!

I've been perfectly frank with all my loved ones and started a "no gift" policy. I have received so much crap over the years: interior, clothing, cheap toys for the kids, that I got fed up. I tell people to donate money to the rainforest, or just suffice with giving me their love. It's worked great!

Wow, that reminds me of Finland with the wood. I would suggest getting a hold of some BIG frames or canvases (4-5), and picking two or three Marimekko patterns and making a series out of them. Hang them on the big panelled wall, and the white wall too.

The bed is Minnen from Ikea. It looks even better when you see it yourself. Both my boys have the same bed, in their shared bedroom. They make any room look great.

I totally second tinafrog01's suggestion!!!

Embrace the darkness. I'm thinking that fuchsia on one or more walls would be a good color to offset the avocado and yellows of the space. An fuchsia would be a great backdrop for an Asian theme. You should be able to find some cheap pillows with cheap but pretty Chinese floral coverings that will liven that futon up. And silk lamps. When buying lamps and plants to add ambience to your space, buy two of a kind. It's a really easy way to amplify a look.
