I'd never heard of powderpost beetles until this post, but did some quick research:

"Pesticidal formulations containing 'borate' are especially effective against ppb in that they penetrate and kill beetles within wood, as well as those entering or exiting the wood surface."
"The two borate formulations currently registered for residual surface treatment of wood are Bora-Care(R) and Tim-Bor(R). Both formulations are virtually nontoxic, odorless, and remain effective for as long as 40 years. Both products are available through professional pest control operators. Customers wishing to perform the application themselves can, with some effort, obtain Bora-Care and Tim-Bor through chemical distributors and lumber companies."

This info is from http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef616.asp and more info on these wood pests can be found there as well. Hope this helps.

I like my toast gluten free! Honestly, I don't eat much toast, since I'm on a gluten free (GF) diet. When I do buy or make GF bread, I like my toast with butter, and maybe a little honey - especially if it's toasted GF banana bread!! :)

I'm near St. Louis, and it woke me up as well. In my half asleep state I wasn't certain what it was. I have this train that goes through right behind my building, and sometimes it causes the building to shake a bit and even the cabinets to clatter lightly depending on the train. My initial thought was that it must be a pretty big train to shake as much as it was! Then I thought, "it's shaking too much to be just a train, maybe it's an earthquake..." Then, I thought, "nah, that's crazy", and went back to sleep. When I heard on the radio this morning that there was indeed an earthquake, I was like, "No Way!" Weird. I felt the aftershock mid morning as well. I was more alert to it that time. It's odd when it feels like your floor is sitting on jello... :)

My mom told me that while nearly all pie recipes call for cold water (or even ice cold water as in the one you gave), that the trick to a nice flaky crust is to use hot water. It's worth trying. :)

I love making mint water! Mint leaves were already mentioned, and that's one way to make mint water (and a very good fresh way), but I don't usually have fresh mint available. So, I've taken to using peppermint essential oil. Just one drop of this essential oil in a gallon of water gives the water a nice refreshing light minty taste. Yummy!

Good for the French!

I am TOTALLY anti-GMFood! It's unnatural, and there is not enough evidence to prove it is good for people with no ill side effects. Give me natural, sustainable food any day.

As to GM Foods "staving off world hunger", I find that ridiculous! Studies have shown that sustainable farming can produce a higher yield, and I know from a personal source that it is more cost-effective, while making it possible to use the land every year to grow crops.

Also, some GM seeds are modified such that new seeds must be repurchased each year because seeds cannot be kept over to grow a crop the next year. If the world becomes more dependent on these GM crops, and something happens to the source that provides those seeds, world hunger will definitely become a problem!
