I do this because I'm a visual thinker. However, I only have about 2 shelves of colored books, and the rest are grouped as ginormous art history books. In my old apartment, I did rainbow order but alternating on two bookcases on either side of the TV. So it was pinks and reds on one case, orange on the next case, yellow on the first, etc. I grouped items with similar colors on those shelves, but none of them were stuffed full. I had plenty of black shelf to balance it. I think that's the key: giving space for each color to breathe.

After having a $200+ electric bill for keeping the apartment around 68-70, we now keep the place at 55 during the day and 60ish when we're at home. Our walls and windows are poorly insulated, so all the heat seeps out or up for our neighbors. Nashville has been very cold this winter, so I layer up and have a blanket on the couch. We use the space heater for the room we're in, and we have a hot water bottle to warm the bed. Our cat acts like a heating pad as well :)

I'm with AeonElpis. I don't want to listen to your child scream and carry on any more than I want a dog to sniff my crotch and drool on me.

I love Kate Spade accessories and clothes (actually everything but most of their bags), and that couch is AMAZING!

I've been dreaming of being able to paint. Beige boxes are all I've known for 26 years. I know what colors I always like seeing in the photos on this site so my vision is working with what I have. I'd like to do a celadon green in my living room, gray in the dining room, peacock in the bedroom, and something REALLY bold in the bath.

These rooms are GORGEOUS!! I always liked black and white, patterns, and colors, but it seemed like it was too much all together. This is great inspiration.

Our Russian Blue mix drinks found water constantly! Or the toilet bowl. After splashing it with her paws. She sleeps in her cat bed but also claimed an ottoman that now has a permanent divot in the middle. Randomly, she'll sleep on the floor or on my husband's backpack.

As for toys: she chews on my Bertoia, thinks tissue paper and milk rings are cracktastic, loves her Cat Dancer and is out to get my Alexander Girard curtains.

But she's absolutely adorable. We taught her to jump up on chairs and tables on command, and she plays fetch. Though she can be co-dependent and follow me EVERYWHERE.

$850 a month including water for a 2br/2ba 1050 sq. ft. apartment in Nashville in a nice area. Too bad the bad isn't very well maintained. Apartments are ridiculous here. You either have to live in an outer suburb to get an affordable new place, pay more than in Atlanta to live near the city, or live in an older not so great place. There are WAY more condos than apartments here, and property owners know Vandy students will pay anything.

In ATL:

$500 for a basement sublet
$475 for 1 BR in a luxury 3 bedroom split with 2 roommates
$835 for a 2 BR/1 BA house next to Emory w/ not central AC
Best deal: cat sitting for a summer in a condo built in the 40s for free

My childhood bed came from IKEA, and it's still in good shape over 20 years later. The only crap that falls apart are the MDF pieces, all the wood and metal pieces actually hold up.

Another good way to save: dumpster dive at apartments and dorms at the end of the school year. You get 24 hours to move your stuff so there's always great finds. The TV, bookcase, lamp, and rug at my first place all came from fellow Emory students who couldn't move all their stuff out in time.

I met Philip Moulthrop on my very first day at The Carter Center as their art and volunteer assistant. They have several Moulthrop and Maloof wood pieces in the collection that were given to Pres. Carter (who is a woodworker by hobby as well). So gorgeous to see in person, especially Philip's Spalted Silver Maple piece that he dropped off that day.

I have my mom's childhood dresser in my dining room as a buffet. It's been repainted black, and the pulls have been replaced with modern nickel handles. It's really handy for large glass dishes, placemats, napkins, and serving dishes. Just hide them in the drawers, and you don't have to take out half your stuff to get one item.

This is the best thing I can find to kill mold and mildew in grout and on tile. Vinegar, enzymes, Mrs. Meyers, BonAmi, Concrobium, steam mopping, bleach, NOTHING was able to get the mildew off of my bathroom floor except this sucker. Maybe if my landlord would actually fix the ventilator to VENTILATE, I wouldn't have this problem, but I'd rather try this and quickly vacuum the floor than fill my house with bleach fumes.

I have a basket in my closet, and we have 2 ginormous baskets (3 for $12 at Ross) with lids that I shove as much laundry in as possible. They live in the corner of our bedroom to hide the idiotically placed outlet (and cords) and cable jack next to the dresser. I do big loads at our apartment laundromat (pain to go outside and walk a block), and schlep as much as I can to my parents on Sundays. The baskets are dark, but I'd rather have a more modern looking hamper.

I've got that big, dumb fluorescent strip in my kitchen that makes everything look yellow. It's awful. Any tips to cancel out that funky cast?

What do these people think when designing rentals? Boob lights, tacky brass, cable jacks 5 feet from an outlet. Wow.

Um, what's with the purple CARPET in the one photo? Who carpets their bathroom??????

I *kind* see where the zebra thing is going. It's sort of gothic and funky. You'll never be able to sell your house with it though.

I would do an accent wall of chocolate/espresso brown if that isn't your bed in the photo. Its a slightly preppy color combo to do icy blue and chocolate, but its still fresh enough to not be overdone. Then you could add cream elements to that wall to pop. Plus chartreuse looks awesome next to such a dark, rich neutral like chocolate.
