The best research is just down the street. Walk the neighborhood and check out what you like. If it's growing there, it's likely to do well in your yard as well. Trick is just identifying the plants... great way to meet your neighbors because most want to talk all about their gardens.

If you get online or look in books, keep in mind that they are likely showing pictures from other places with different climates.

The return whirl of a circular dial phone
The mechanical clicks and grinds of loading/rewinding film
Typewriter sounds or even the clicking of an old PS2 keyboard
Booting from a 5.25 inch floppy drive
Channing channels on an old circular dial TV

I expected to be disappointed. I was not.... I will try all three!

Say, anyone try just tossing a layer of compost directly on the lawn? I know a guy that swears by it. He says every year he gets a load of dirt-like compost and spreads it around about 1/2 inch thick and ends up with the greenest lawn on the block. In Colorado we're not going to be able to water much this year so I'd like to give it any help I can to at least survive. I've already removed as much grass as I care to from the yard.

We donate practically everything. Rarely shed anything of significant value that merits the hassle of selling it.

Yeah.. also: I stripped off 10 layers of paint from the all the trim to reveal wonderful stained mahogany. it was a TON of work.
I roto-tilled, added manure and reseeded the green way between the building and the street, replaced sprinkler heads, trimmed the bushes and cleaned up a ton of trash/cigarette butts.
I repainted front steps taking care to sand them for icy days.
I put together planters for my windows and any neighbors (5) who wanted them.
I got the swamp cooler working (Had to break into the access route to the roof)
and more...
Never told the landlord. (oops)
Finally, realized I should just buy a damn house.

I think it's worth a trial separation to verify allergies are related to the animals. Might take a while before the house is clear of the pets before one can be sure. I would certainly offer my place to a friend's pets as long as they got along with mine. The more the merrier.

Wish I could edit my comment. I see now that this is only 3 inches tall... so less of an issue here but for many such setups it's hard to find an attractive flat screen cabinet that has an open shelf under the top surface.

These are said to be wonderful but, it's really hard to find furniture that will accommodate a less lengthy center speaker let alone this. I'm really surprised that builders don't catch on.

Sadly I hear Amazon will begin to cull the reviews... Generally to remove product distributors/Authors from giving high praise to their own product/book/etc but I fear these will also meet the axe soon enough.

Too bad if that turns out to be the case. Viral marketing in it's purest form.

I don't see any significant risks here. The power strip is too large for that particular application but it doesn't give off heat nor would I expect the movement of the drawer to stress the cord -assuming the edges you've cut are not sharp.

The holy grail of hiding power/data/speaker/etc wires has no silver bullet. Every application has a different solution. I'm fond of rolls of Velcro cut into strips that I use to bundle various cables together. One channel of wires always looks more appealing than an uncombed nest of cables with no determinable destination.

I just found out that removing things (Donate/trash), scares the hell out of me. I was reorganizing a closet when I had to ask myself seriously:
Will I ever go on a camping trip again? So I really need this backpack?

That was a deafening look at my age and the idea that I may NEVER do certain things again. That part of my life is OVER.
So I freak out and do nothing.
