The house is adorable as-is and blends well with the existing buildings. If I were to re-paint i would choose a darker slate gray but also keep in mind that this increases your heat load of your home because the darker color retains the heat rather than reflects it. So unless you have really great insulation then I would recommend you going with a lighter color paint that is high albedo (high solar reflectance) to keep energy costs in check and do the trim in a darker color and paint the door fire engine red.

I currently live in Gold Coast about 2 blocks away from Lincoln Park and live right on the lake. Yes, the summer is amazing, the views, the roof top deck, and even the farmers markets but, I have to say that once dark sets there isn't too much to do and I often find myself venturing out to other areas of the city. I have to say that this winter has been pretty miserable so if you want to go home to a place with tons of things to do close by then go to UK but if you want to be closer to everything else than go to LP. I think there is middle ground somewhere which is what I am trying to find now.

It should be against code as you don't have a 30" x 48" clear space on center in front of the cooktop as per Fair Housing which is a Federal law. All kitchen appliances must comply with this regulation. The building I live in here in Chicago has the same situation with 24" gas ranges right against the wall. I don't necessarily know how they got away with it especially since it's most of the kitchens in the building are renovations. You could try tempered back painted glass on that wall as one solution. Just adding tile would not look finished as how would you deal with the tile edges and where would you stop the tile? You would probably have to tile the whole thing but then again you don't want your kitchen looking like your bathroom. Ask for the drywall specs to see if they used type "X".

I just moved to Chicago from Houston a month ago and I am glad I left when I did because my old office was in Chase Tower which now doesn't have any windows on the east side.. supposedly up to the 35th floor out of 75! I do however wish I was down there to be with my family who are luckily okay on a little further than 5 miles west of the Galleria. They boarded up their windows and luckily bought a generator on Thursday so they have some power. It's going to be a very long clean up process! I can just imagine being without AC right now and all of the mosquitos that will hatch in a few days... it's going to be miserable!

Having experience working for a firm designing condos under construction in Austin at the moment let me just put in my comments... the architects come up with great solutions at masking the parking garage and come up with several ideas at incorporating them into the facade and blend in so that they "disappear" but when the reality of construction costs come in all of that time and effort in these great ideas get thrown away due to value engineering. Developers/clients can't justify the cost of a parking structure that they will get minimum return on.

one option is to add wall paper to the niche like this:

http://store.roseandradish.com/images/CNwoodpaper_m.jpg

then add some floating shelving in white laquer and stainless steel or brushed nickel accents from the hardware.

this image is similar to what I am trying to explain:

http://www.gruenbeck.co.at/site/pics/kollektion/rimadesio_zenit.jpg

since i don't really know what else is going on in the space, the budget, and what other finishes are being used this is just one idea.

i would really appreciate if they changed the title of the show to HGTV decorating star because they aren't moving any walls around, changing plumbing or really looking out for the code requirements required for the spaces being "designed". They are just picking out paint colors and furnishing the place like it was a home but this past episode was a hospitality space which requires certain parameters around flammabilty of textiles and framing of furniture...etc... sorry about the soapbox.

using plywood on a kitchen counter doesn't seem like the most sanitary option. i have used formica's luxe wood laminate on several condominium projects for counters, desk, and wall veneers and they look great...

http://www.formica.com/publish/site/na/us/en/index/laminate/collection/luxe_collection_.html

i think everyone is just used to seeing the really bad laminates and would think twice about using the good ones if they saw them in person.

I also want to add...that in many states there are licensure/title acts in place for interior designers who must pass the NCIDQ-qualifications test in order to stamp drawings and to use the title "interior designer". NCIDQ has changed their regulations and I believe since January of this year you must have attended an accredited program in order to complete your requirements to take the test. Previously you were allowed to grandfathered in but this has changed.

here is the link to The Council for Interior Desgn Accreditation
http://www.accredit-id.org/. On here you can find all the accreditted programs. All schools that are accreddited follow very strict and similar syllabi, classes, and classwork. I attended Colorado State University and learned tons and highly recommend it. Every program does focus on different things... my program focused heavily on research based programming and research based design. Other programs focus more on the conceptual side of things. I think you need to explore the options and find what works for you. The years I was there...02-06 we did not have one residential studio project which I liked because we were taught how to design larger spaces, more code issues/accessibility etc..design for the masses per se. I now work at a large firm in Houston feel that my education prepared me well for the commercial work I am doing. Of course it only covers the basics because I can't explain to you how much I have learned working the field the past 2 years! Looking at some of peers portfolio's which we all had to do as a graduation requirement, I feel as though my school being near the rocky mountains (not so design savvy) outperformed some highly regarded design schools. If you are serious about design it's all a matter of how far you want to push yourself, and the design. There is never a right answer to design which can be very exhausting..but there is always a better way to do things. One last thing as I get off my soapbox....check out the professors. Have they only been teaching or have they had some practical experience...what have the published etc. Good luck in the design field!
