Styrofoam trays (as well as a finer texture foam you can find at art stores) open up similar possibilities and are more accessible for younger hands or if you prefer not to invest in too many tools. A sharp pencil, pen, and any other materials you can press into the foam to make marks and leave impressions, work great. Thx for the inspiration.

my mom was a nursery school teacher...
she always added hand-lotion to her homemade play dough (how nice that now that we have essential oils to choose from!) It kept the dough nice and pliable, and made both kids and her hands soft!

some of the small ones are in the $400-ish range (depends on how many of the edition are already purchased) -- the larger ones get up there -- $900 - $1200 to 2500. they come framed too... you should shoot lisa and email. and check out her blog (linked in her name)... there are other yummy ones. go visit and see if you can work something out!

tallguy... good question. it's pretty safe to say that most work is $500 and above, and lots more pushing closer to 10,000. tho most all of the galleries showing have made an effort to include smaller works, prints, etc, that can be purchased at the lower-cost end of the show's spectrum. they also have things hidden away in the back... sometimes drawing in viewers with the larger works, and have smaller works available. so ask!

Here is a beautiful camp cot that folds into a narrow rosewood box that looks like a credenza when not in use.

thank you everyone for your thoughts, stories and even worries!
clearly there's no one right answer here. As i've been speaking with people about this question, and listening to you - it seems that two things apply -- giving a piece to someone when they've already expressed/hinted interest in it, is a strong indication of hitting the mark -- unless there is a way to include them in the process of choosing it. Also, being open enough to enjoy giving the gift, as well as accepting an honest reaction and re-gifting/recycling/removing! (be you the artist, Lori, or the mother, Francesca) pretty true with all gifts, be they socks, a sweater or a book. I imagine that all things given with a true heart can eventually find their true recipients!

You can also find chairs, in this darker brown/or black you mention, at Flora Grubb in San Francisco (plant/outdoor gardening center) they are reasonably priced and hail from south africa.
