I have a bin similar to the ceramic Plow & Hearth one listed and there is no odor or fruit flies ... unless you leave scraps sitting in there for over a week. In the past, I used the freezer method until a housemate decided it was disgusting. So, I guess having composting scraps sit on the countertop is better? Neither bothers me as long as there are no fruit flies!

The Sur la Table bin is really cute but speaking from experience, a handle is a MUST. I am typically carrying mine down stairs to the larger compost bin and usually have recycling, etc. in tow as well. Form should follow function and not having a handle makes this a loser IMHO.

I meant to leave the comment below for you! I'm sure the glass would look awesome but for me, would have been much harder to implement in my space (not to mention, more $$$). I did the chalkboard and I LOVE it. Such a great transformation. There are other photo of chalkboard backsplashes on AT, search!

I loved the chalkboard paint idea and since I'm in a rental, thought it would be the least intrusive on the property and easiest to implement. So I made it happen today (chevron pattern and all) and I love it! The wall was white and dirty previously and this makes a great impact, is fun and I imagine, will hide dirt better. Cabinets, appliances and countertop items pop really nicely. http://instagram.com/p/R6PtBLiV3M/ http://instagram.com/p/R6QGFGCV3f/ @kassgood

I did this with an old glass mug that says "DAD's" I picked up at a thrift shop. http://www.flickr.com/photos/askdzign/3718894015/in/set-72157615152097676/

Yes, I have thought of that Jezebella. But, for years it was stored out of sight in a cabinet, and well, what's the use in that? It's so pretty, I wanted to see it. The wattage is pretty low and for the most part it only gets a bit of sunlight through the top of that door - and we are on the first floor so it's minimal.

Cute! Harder when you have to put it all in a larger collection with that of roommates. There's a great store in San Fran that sells all sorts of vintage cooking gems. It's called Cookin' and is in the Lower Haight on Divisadero.

Haha I had to laugh about sleeping in your workout clothes. I also did a bootcamp last year at 6:30AM during Boston winter and it was so hard to drag myself out of bed knowing I would be facing brutal cold AND a hard workout! Maybe that would have helped!

I'm also an oversleeper ... have never been a morning person no matter how hard I try. It will last for a couple of months when I get a new job, then I am back to snoozing. Alarm in the bathroom would be nice except I don't think my roommates would appreciate. Plus, it's down a long hallway and I don't think I'd ever even hear it!

I have heard about some alarm clocks that slowly wake you up by getting louder and louder which is supposed to be more "natural". Anyone have any suggestions?

chalkboard paint! just kidding ... how about wallpaper? there are some really great wallpaper designs out there. Though this birch tree paper (http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/good-questions/good-questions-what-is-this-wallpaper-015132) has apparently "been everywhere lately" I think it would look nice in your space. Though a little pricey.

Ikea has fabric panels printed with birch trees that might work if you can paste those up there somehow. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40122212

Graham Brown also has some cool "feature wall paintables" that add texture and pattern while allowing you to change it up from time to time by simply painting on a new shade. http://www.grahambrown.com/us/store/viewCategory.do?id=3175644

What is the color on the wall of the bathroom?

Love the orange sofa ... the shape is amazing!
I actually think the sofa would look even better against the blue-green color in the bathroom. It would be a bit more unexpected. But what you have is still nice!
