Wow, this is really fantastic! What kind of vine are you growing on the far wall? We have a retaining wall to deal with, and wanted something that would provide good cover and not be toxic to our dog.

Also, is that a cement planter that the Japanese maple is in? Really cool.

This is Geoff (one of the owners).

Thanks for all the compliments!

@MonkeyMama: Greige is right - we use a manual push mower. Didn't know they still made them until we needed one!

@Amy: We stumbled on the red/orange ones at K-Mart. The long wooden one (which we added the trellis to) came from Lowe's.

@hiwelder: It's a bit of a visual illusion. Those pots are actually sitting on top of a thick retaining wall about 15ft behind our fence (the yard/patio is split - our neighbor has the back portion abutting the retaining wall). Not sure how he has the pots secured, but they've never budged.

And for all those concerned about Alfred (the dog) - not to worry - he is indeed allowed on the grass. Just not when he's outside by himself (usually first thing in the morning, or if we'll be gone for a few hours on a nice day and don't want to leave him indoors). Otherwise, he will dig up the grass and pee profusely all over it.

When we're out there with him, he's free to enjoy the grass as much as we do!

It is really beautiful!

But I would be far too concerned about the mirror's frame to keep it there for long.

Uhhhh - I love this site, and I hate that one of my few posts has to be negative, but this just seems . . . tacky. :-\

Thanks to everyone for the great ideas!

Given the compliments on the floor and the point about having to put one foot on a raised mat whilst using the toilet, I'm leaning toward getting something that can be put away when not in use. Some of the designs linked to above look really good.

Thanks again,

Geoff

I'm amazed by the number of the people who advocate picking up live mice in any kind of makeshift container. Although they are living creatures, they are "wild" animals. If they get out while you're carrying them, you could get bitten, and depending on where they came from, God knows what kinds of diseases they may have (would you pick up a subway rat?).

A snap trap may not be the most humane thing out there, but it quickly gets the job done with minimal mess and pain. Just make sure to seal up any holes so they don't come back - problem solved, and you won't have to kill any others.
