Love it. I hope they have more pictures of gatherings that include people over the age of 22. And perhaps fewer folk staring off into the future while refilling their heirloom Meerschaums. I really do love Kinfolk, though. Gorgeous bit of publishing.

My partner has one very hard and fast rule about loading the dishwasher: "GO NEAR IT AND I'LL BREAK YOUR LEGS." Even though I know a galantine from a ballotine, I have no idea how to put the wine glasses into the dishwasher so that they don't break.

Like I once said here (http://www.poormansfeast.com/archives/my-plant-based-diet-of-delusion.html), grass fed beef is not a vegetable. Being hip and trendy, and jumping on a bandwagon does not make one a vegan, or a vegetarian. Bittman is neither (and neither am I, for the record). He's also a little late to the party (see Pollan's "Eat more plants"). We're totally hung up on labels in this country: you're not a vegan unless you are. You're not a vegetarian if you eat a little meat every once in a while. Either do it, or get off the soapbox. I much prefer Bill McKibben's approach: he's a vegetarian, but if he's in someone's home and they serve him meat, he eats it out of respect for his hosts, and appreciation. To not do so would make him a disrespectful idiot. Bittman's claim that PB&J is vegan is ridiculous; in that case, so is popcorn. So are potato chips and pretzels and Funyans and Bugles.

How timely: my partner, after trying everything, just had surgery to 1) remove her uvula, which was literally resting on the back of her throat; 2) correct her seriously deviated septum; 3) repair 2 sinus turbinates.
It was NOT a pleasant surgery, but it was performed under general anesthesia by the top doc in NY. She is still recuperating, but already is breathing better. Apnea is nothing to be taken lightly.

I've had a longtime hatred of beets.....My entire life, I hated them --- loathed them --- for their sweet earthiness and bizarre texture. I always wanted to love them, though, for their empirical beauty, and when my partner and I got together, I discovered that as much as I hated them, that's how much she loved them. Every autumn, I'd see them, resplendent as jewels at the market, calling out to me, but I just couldn't do anything about it.

Until I hit 40.

And for reasons that I will never understand, I was pushing my shopping cart through my local market one day, and stopped DEAD at the beets. Right there, I envisioned a room temperature salad of roasted beets, shaved fennel, orange segments, red pepper flakes, and sliced red onion, tossed with feta. I called Susan from my cell and said "Guess what you're having for dinner tonight?"

From that point forward, I love and make beets in every permutation: in risotto, as a thin-sliced vegetable Napoleon, in salad. But never, ever in borscht --- my grandmother made it, terribly --- which is probably why I hated it for so long.

There you have it.

An original 1960s Knoll tulip table with mahogany top, for free: someone left it in a dumpster in an empty part of the office building I worked in, so I moved it into my office, and then got permission to take it with me when our team was laid off.

Jacqueline, I would soak it in a mild saltwater, let it drain, freeze it, and then thaw it. Let me know if it works---
