'I do not get the appeal of his designs. At all.'

'keep calm. carry on.'

linus22, I might extend that very advice to you.

I agree with white paint. Not only will it help the brick disappear, the shadows will create an interesting texture all while brightening up the room. Anything else you might do to it will almost certainly make the corner look more fussy than you may want. Good luck.

Most of these entries didn't seem to have a prayer of being built for 99k. The guidelines developed for this competition were far to vague to produce anything that could, with confidence, be built within the prescribed budget.

I think it can certainly be done, just under other circumstances than I saw presented in this particular competition. I thought the competition was a disappointment.

make sure nothing you try to purchase through Clio is back ordered---if it is expect to wait a long, long time to get what you have paid for...

paint it all--including the trim--barn red or dark gray. it'll lend it a modern feel. we did something similar for a client and the result was very nice; especially at dusk with the windows lit up.

we have trashy, loud, obnoxious neighbors that are absolutely unbearable. i work from home and now wear headphones and have a white noise machine that runs all day to mitigate the noise that they create. i am not sure why the tv needs to be so loud and why yelling from room to room is they only way that they can communicate.

thank god for large earmuff style headphones!

nobody thinks that this is one of those ideas best left in the conceptual design realm?

i am not so into this sort of thing; after purchasing a molo soft wall for a client I find items like this more problematic than pragmatic.

I have to agree with the sentiment of these items being overpriced.

This seems to happen a lot on this site lately. Seems like now, maybe more than any time in recent memory, the idea of 'affordable' wouldn't be so skewed.

This definitely looks like something you might see on MTV Cribs...right after you see the fridge full of Red Bull and Cristal. Sorry to say it but not tasteful in the least.

I believe that one of the reasons that Mies configured the home as he did was because this area is (and was) considered a flood zone--obviously the extent of this particular flooding wasn't accounted for, but nonetheless the architect was thinking of this even when the home was built.

BrooklynRob--you are right, Palin is a joke. It's shameful that people would even consider such an unqualified person to be our next VP.

I was intrigued by the post but after looking at the images I still don't really get a sense of the place. As someone who is unfamiliar with the area I would like to see some more images to better understand.

really great renovation. i have been reading this blog for a couple of years now and this is the most inspiring bit i have seen thus far. great vision and i applaud your ability to stick with it. you started with the typical 'brady bunch' style and ended up with a case study quality home. needless to say, i am completely jealous.

cheers.

I would argue that the inherent ability to identify the emotional needs and wants of a client is what separates a successful architect from the crowd.

In my experience the dialog between architects and clients becomes far too serious and verbose to really address the simplest needs of the design in an effort to create a space that is timelessly comfortable for THEM (the clients) to inhabit. My advice to a potential client would be to gather images, images, and more images of what you 'want' from your home and find an architect that is flexible and allows your sense of humor and idiosyncrasies to dictate, at least to a certain extent, the climate of the design process.

I am uncertain as to how forms and questionnaires can help cultivate a healthy personal architect client relationship. This seems like a sales pitch more suited to programming commercial space, but hey, I'm just one guy right?
