Ha! My boyfriend and I recently moved into a 450 square foot apartment and it seems so huge and luxurious to us - we both lived for several years in separate studios of less than 200 square feet. Our layout is helpful - big open living room, decent kitchen and two small separate rooms with doors. But yeah, welcome to new york, two people in 400 square feet is practically spacious! Boring boring boring. Matt's was U-G-L-Y except for the dining romm and in Jen's space, the dining table seemed so small - it only seats 6? Where is everyone going to eat? I think everyone's opinion is valid. The way money as well as all other aspects of the relationship are handled depends on what makes the two people involved most comfortable. I dunno. I just moved in with my bf and we had to make some big purchases together - a couch, mattress/boxspring, tv. This is my first real cohabitation and I've never made such big purchases with another person and it completely freaked me out. We talked about it and just agreeing aloud what would happen to the items in the event of our breakup took the stress out of it for me. Leaving it unsaid or undealt with is leaving some honest communication out of the relashe so I don't feel that it's self-fulfilling an end to our happy coupledom. It actually made me feel closer to him knowing he was willing to discuss my icky feelings with me. And the living together is going great!! We are more in love than ever. In manhattan it is pretty safe to say that landlords don't mind you breaking your lease. I gave mine 2 weeks notice with 4 months left on my lease and they let me go AND gave me my security deposit back. Just ask. It's nice to have when you live in a concrete jungle. My old NYC apartment had a lovely veil of ivy over the windows in the summer. I would trim it back 2-3 times per summer to keep it from blocking all light. In my new place, all of our windows overlook ugly airshafts and I was happy to see a wall of ivy creep down the wall across from us as it got warmer. It really makes a difference. I admit I just don't get it. These are popping up EVERYWHERE and to me, they have the look of cheap office carpet. The easy cleaning is really the only benefit I see. I think this is a fad that will be "sooo 200x" a few years from now. Apartment Therapy Chicago | FLOR on Sale |
