I have free subscriptions to some really cool magazines through Freebizmag.com. Depending the industry you're in, you can choose the magazines you would like a free subscription to (there are LOTS, like Interview, Saveur digital, Seed, some of the Nature journal spinoffs), Freebizmag.com will forward your info to the publishers for them to decide if they want to give you a free subscription. Since I get those magazines sent to my work, I haven't noticed any extra junk mail whatsoever.

If a new magazine joins their network that fits your profile, they will send you an email asking you if you would like a free subscription. Free > cheap.

I read this post yesterday and there were a lot of really thoughtful comments, like 40 of them. They've all disappeared except for the ones that don't disagree with the post.

Seeing how your couch is really low to the ground, may I suggest this extremely affordable yet sturdy table from CB2?

I have one in my bathroom, it is so easy to clean and looks really nice. And it is HEAVY, it will not budge from being bumped.

I've seen this brand of beer at 2 BevMos in San Diego. Some of the Cost Plus World Markets that have an extensive beer collection have it too.

I thought this looked so familiar having never been there, the Marin Civic Center was used in Gattaca and THX1138.

I love these videos! I've been meaning to make his Puerco Pibil recipe, except I can't seem to procure pork butt and banana leaves at the same time, only one or the other.

I would love to see the Christopher Walken one.

Does corn flour = corn starch or corn meal? Or is it something else completely different?

The great thing about copper (other than the beautiful patina) is that it's antifungal/anti-algal.

The first thing my graduate advisor told me when I arrived in her lab:

"Clean desk, messy mind."

She was one of those brilliant people who really sucked at organizing her papers, but they're filed very neatly and extensively cross referenced in her brain. Sometimes keeping a neat office just wasn't a priority until a paper has been submitted and a grant has been applied. Then it starts all over again. Would a neater office make her more successful at what she does? I highly doubt it.

If the inhabitants of the house is totally fine with it and it's not a public health issue, then it's not your problem. Maybe you shouldn't go to their house if it makes you uncomfortable.

When I have to slice the cake into layers, I take a ruler and measure the thickness I want from the bottom of each piece, mark with toothpicks every couple of inches around the circumference. Then all you have to do while slicing is connect the dots, the result is professional looking evenly thick layers. Use two large flat spatulas (like the ones for flipping burgers) to transfer the layers.

Also, the top most layer should be the nicest looking bottom from one of the cakes flipped upside down, that's how you get a perfectly flat top.

If I recall correctly, Williams-Sonoma also has (or least used to have) an olive-oil/balsamic vinegar bar usually stocked with bread cubes for tasting. It's been a while since I've been to Williams-Sonoma.

I love my ramekins and use them for everything. One seemingly obvious use for the ceramic ramekin is keeping butter melted for dipping various shellfish meats, other materials just simply don't work as well. I use my ramekin with the tealight candle base of my home fragrance oil burner to keep the butter melted.

I wonder if loosely tying a paper bag around the fruit will do the trick? Ethylene gas from the ripening fruit is supposed to help with faster ripening. At least that's what they do with bananas when they're still attached to the tree.

I'm having same issues with my outdoor tomatoes, this is one solution I'm considering.

I put the paper/plastic/cans into a paper grocery bag and reuse the bag until it rips like the first commenter. Glass has to be separated and those go into a basket from the thrift store.

Some times my girlfriends and I have a clothing swap party. You bring anything that you're tired of or don't wear for whatever reason, and throw them into a pile.

We drink cocktails, try on clothes, and everyone goes home with lots of things to add to their closet. It feels awesome to take home a bunch of clothes for free as well as getting rid of your stuff.

The hostess sends the unwanted clothes off to donation and get a tax deduction for hosting the party.

There are community gardens in Seattle that have a community compost bin. I don't know what the rules are, like if you have to have a plot in the community garden in order to take compost. But my personal feeling is one should take as much as they've contributed.

In San Diego, the city landfill takes yard waste and makes big ginormous piles of compost or mulch. And it's pretty good stuff. San Diego residents (with ID or utility bill for a San Diego address) get up to 2 cubic yards of compost for free each time you go, you just have to bring your own containers and load it yourself.

A wine bar called Crush (now closed) in San Diego had their wine stored in sections of PVC tubes. They were lit from behind with blue christmas lights and looked really cool.

That's so funny, I have dining chairs but no table. I was looking at the same exact table at Dania to go with the black bent plywood chairs.

My dining chairs look like these without the knotches in the lumbar area:
