For those unable to do any rewiring, Home Depot sells these little plastick doohickeys that fit onto your switchplate. Depending on whether or not you want to prevent yourself (and others) from turning the switch on or off, you take off the appropriate screw and add on the thingamabob, then screw it back on. It's hard to describe, but essentially it's just a perfectly-sized little piece of plastic that will hold the switch in one position. If you want to keep the switch on, you would take off the bottom screw, place the plastic thing in the right spot, and then screw it to the switchplate. I think they cost about a dollar, plus you might need to buy a longer screw.

There are a few fabric patterns that I have coveted for a while but haven't purchased because I don't have anything to sew them with. First up would be new curtains, then possibly a slipcover for my couch!

I'm not an overly-cautious mother - I'd say I'm pretty easy going about letting kids get bumps and bruises, eat some dirt, etc. However, this looks like a great candidate for inducing positional asphyxia, which may be a leading cause of SIDS. At least, that's what they're saying this year. It's definitely goregous but it doesn't look the least bit comfortable.

@randylandd - um, wow. Anyway.

I agree with what I think some of the posters above are saying - the thing that really caught my eye in this picture is the combination of the huge doorway and the eye-catching chair. Maybe it's just the angle that the picture was taken at, but that's the only thing that seems a little off to me. When I imagine a wall behind it, your room looks great. If you're interested in some sort of room divider there, that'd be my suggestion. The table, however, looks fine to me.

If there are studs at the top of your walls, you might want to look into picture rail molding. I'm not sure how much weight it can hold, though.

Free stuff!

My worst mishap was probably letting my son play with my cell phone a few times when he was very young. He didn't break it right away, but it had problems not long after and apparently his drool triggered the sneaky "I've got water damage" sticker that was under my phone's cover. I was then stuck with a broken phone and no warranty. Also, my son only found the phone interesting when he could press the buttons and make it beep, so it didn't even get to live on as a toy.

I agree with the other commenters - nothing really huge is needed for 2, because they won't remember it and you have years of big parties ahead of you.

Having said that, if there are a bunch of similar-aged kids that you definitely want involved, you could go the same route that I did for my son's recent 3rd birthday. We had a private party at The Little Gym. Altogether we had 10 boys, from just under one year old up to 6. The babies weren't able to do a whole lot, but they did get to crawl around together and explore the brightly colored mats. The toddlers and bigger kids had a great time running around being crazy boys on all of the gym equipment. They got to spend one hour in the gym, then we moved to the party room where the staff had already set everything up. They provided juice boxes and all of the paper goods, and they cleaned up afterward. Just remember that, especially with toddlers, the parents will probably be running around just as much as the kids. Plus it's not all that interactive if you want to invite grandparents or other family members who don't have kids, but they do have a big glass wall and an area with chairs for people to watch. (I'm assuming they're all set up pretty similarly.)

THIS might just get me to switch from my oh-so-comfortable MS ways.

I don't want a cell phone that works like a computer. I want a computer that's (almost) as portable as a cell phone. If I have the ability to carry around 160 Gigs of music, movies, pictures, files, etc.; then I want to be able to look/watch on a screen that's bigger than an index card. If I have the ability to carry the entire internet with me, then I want to be able to see the entire internet, not just parts of some pages and/or the pared-down "mobile" pages. I want it all.

Since zombies are all the rage lately, they should market this as a zombie light, similar to a bug zapper. The nice glowing brains draw them in, and you can sit nearby with your shotgun and pick 'em off. :)

My mother definitely had a nomadic spirit, and we lived in many different places when I was young. My advice echoes Babyshrink's on this point: once your child starts making true friends (middle or high school), they need to be grounded.

I bought the Kid Tough camera for my son for Christmas, and I wouldn't recommend it. I agree with TammyE - there's no reason why you can't put a decent camera into the kid-friendly casing. The resolution is horrible, and like Kaz said, the flash doesn't always go off when it should. My son is just about to turn 3, and I think I might get him a simple, grownup camera for his birthday. The Kid Tough is about $70, and there are definitely better cameras that can be had for the same price. I guess I'm lucky that my son is usually careful with his belongings, so I'm not too worried about him breaking it. (Besides, I've dropped mine before and it still works!)

I'm with rockabyemama - the steering handle is a lifesaver! We have the Radio Flyer too. Although I must also concede to genxmom - the plastic wheels on my son's trike are definitely too loud, which I seem to notice every time we take it out.

My handwriting (like my drawing ability) is atrocious, so I pretty much print everything. If I'm writing something very quickly it becomes sort of an amalgam of both and is virtually indecipherable to everyone, sometimes myself included. I will insist that my son learns cursive, but if he's as bad at it as I am I won't stress about it because I do think that its usefulness / need is waning. However, no matter if he's writing by hand or typing, my son WILL learn (and use!) correct spelling, grammar and punctuation!

Good for her. I had that kind of freedom when I was younger and I'm now a very confident, capable woman. I hope that I'll be strong enough to give my son the same liberties. (And that I don't fall into "the world was different then" thinking.)
