As a work-in-progress minimalist, another point to add to the above excellent suggestions is to rotate your art or collections. I have a lot of art books/vases/ teapots/ paintings that i love and do not want to through away, so I keep them in my large storage closet and bring them out on a rotating basis. I save 1500 a month owning rather than renting; this does not include the tax deductions. Everyone is different. I don't judge others for for renting. It's just a decision one has to make to fit into their lifestyle and goals. I'm Renting...And Okay with That |

i think this is the after picture... i love the elfa system. It has increased my storage capacity 2 to 3 fold. It's just amazing. The folks at container store are a great resource and are extremely patient in helping you with different configurations to maximize storage needs. I bought some plexiglass panels and a carpet knife from home depot to cover up a patch of brick in my closet before installing an elfa system. The plexiglass helps to maintain the "look" of exposed brick while preventing any stray chips or dust from falling onto the clothes. I suppose you can something similar in your kitchen. Cut the plexiglass carefully and place it against the wall. If needed, you can use some silicon glue to stick it to the wallpaper. I don't think it should be more than 100$ and a few hours of your weekend. Is It Possible to Waterproof Wallpaper? Good Questions |

I always insist that my guests take my comfy bedroom using the excuse that the animals (dog and cat) usually like to sleep with me and that it would be more convenient for me to sleep in the living room with the animals so that the pets can have ready access to their food/litter box elsewhere in the apt. I love how eclectic his taste is and the gorgeous collection in the bookshelf but the other collections are a little overwhelming especially the stacks of books everywhere and the haphazard shirt draped over the banister and the shirts on hangers hanging out in the open is a little too quirkly for my taste. I just hang it on plastic clothes hangars along the length of my bath tub. Since the washer does a fairly good job in squeezing most of the water, there is very little residual dripping. I usually wash once weekly and have ample room for clothes that I have. I only use the clothes dryer for towels and sheets. The $5 Indoor Clothesline And Why We Can't Live Without It |

My condo rules forbid any hanging of laundry, towels, planters, bird feeders. They even forbid welcome mats and anything that detracts from the uniform look of each unit. I air dry in my bathroom and it works just fine. I wish I could ask my building if I could install a laundry line on the roof deck but that would probably not sit well with the designers on the condo board. I tried dying some old shorts (my favorite ones) from army green to brown. I bought 2 packets of RIT and used it on the stove top with an pot. It gave off an awful chemical smell but the end results were great. It does get messy no matter how you try to avoid any spills or splashes. I disposed of the liquid in the stainless steel kitchen sink and it seemed fairly easy to clean. I was loathe to experiment in my apartment's public washing machines as I didn't know bad the residue would be. I'm actually glad I didn't try it in my bathroom's porcelain sink or bathtub...
