how about complimenting it with a nice soft green from a sort of tarnished-copper-patina family? Maybe not the whole room, but in pops? Or a partial wall divided off by some moldings? That is a kick ass floor. I like how it mimics 20s era traditional tiles, but isn't... have you counted up the $ value? :)

That's a lot of territory for mice (and *shudder* other thingies) to hide in. I'm just sayin'.

Reb...

thank you for clarifying! I thought that was what you likely meant but never hurts to check. By the way, I love the rug... in both design AND location!

:)

I would love to do a back splash like this... but what precisely is a "silicon bikini strap"? I don't necessarily recommend googling the term, unless you have your "safe search" feature turned on to filter out the naughty results. :)

Are we just talking about simple silicon strips of some kind? And where would one get such an item?

Gorgeous design!

not working for me either, running either the latest version of Safari or Firefox on mac OS X 10.4.11... I am not missing the point, right? The slide show should be going by itself while I use my hands to stuff my lazyass face full of grape nuts and a cup of coffee? :)

That is oddly cute... ok, sort of. Most spiders survive our dustbuster just fine, by the way... don't know about the babies, though.

I HIGHLY recommend the alsarp bed base from Ikea... it lifts up (with those hinges that go "pssshhhht" like a hatchback on a car or minivan) and holds itself up until you lower it and gives you sooooo much additional storage space. It's where we keep off season clothes and bedding (spacebags are your friends) and everything Christmas related and three huge boxes of photos I will someday scan. Just try to picture how much space is sitting empty inside of a tallish box spring... it holds a lot and looks fairly nice too... basic white canvas-y cover. But, make sure the cat is out before you close it! :) it isn't on their website in the states but is in stores... our queen was $300. My kids are each getting a smaller version soon (to banish insane quantities of stuffed animals we aren't allowed to get rid of, among other things). You can see it on the UK Ikea site.

I would also suggest making sure your cat has some special hide-y places to run behind/in/up to if she/he choses when company comes or when she/he is just sick of you. :) You can share a space that small with a HAPPY cat. Keep cat HAPPY. Quite crucial to the plan. Don't forget, you guys can go out for dinner when things feel too small... not so much for the cat.

ok, seriously... after the scorpions-in-the-dryer comment... I am never ever leaving my lovely no-poisonous-nothin' northern new england state... not ever. I would cheerfully take 9 months of frigid winters for the rest of my life to know I am free of scorpions in my laundry. I don't think "shudder" even covers that one!!! ;)

In my house, we determine scary status more by whether the scittery beastie is fast, slow or (gulp) predatory... those little jumping/hunting guys are treated with extreme caution... watched one jump 2 feet towards my sister's face once... good times. And they track your movements... bleh!

All types are cupped-and-carded, though... I'm just not a life-smoosher. I would rather hastily exit the shower, turn off the water and go get the "spider kit". What's the alternative? Drowning them and the hoping their little bodies fit down the drain holes? No, thank you.

I don't see a sofa... are you guys referring to the inspiration photo? All I see is the chair, but nothing matching it.

I wouldn't paint it, but I would redo the fabric with something funky, like the (really fabulous) tubby-chaise loungy thing in the inspiration photo. I think one of the tricks to making this kind of project work is to use fabric that is, umm, unexpected. Bold. Really fun and full of color. But personally, I think painting that chair would take it too far from it's roots... so instead of working WITH it, you would almost be denying it's inherent charm. Does that make sense?

I have no idea about craigslist pricing... so much determines furniture "worth", like time period, style, quality and demand... but you could float around ebay and see what similar pieces are going for (and why).

Nice inspiration room! This is all totally my style!

How funny... I bathe every day... and I never knew people were so disgusted by it! How do these people who cringe at baths wash their young kids (if they have any)? Our tub sees an at least 2-4 bathers a day in a family of four, plus whoever showers. We only have the one bathroom, and the tub is also the shower. I don't scrub it before every bath, though obviously I do a once over glance to be sure it's clean enough. And it is... how could it not be with so much water and soap trucking through it in a day? I think people get out of touch with being human by freaking out every time they encounter a less-than-perfectly-sterile environment.

Now don't pass out... we occasionally wash the dog in there too. Though then I usually DO scrub it down afterwards... ;)

Am I an idiot? Is that an alternative spelling of "balcony" that I have never seen before? :) Really cute place... totally not my style... but if it works for you, fantastic! I'd need slippers, for sure... those floors look chilly (but so clean!). I like the bunny on the dish drainer.

I love it love it love it. AND I grew up playing with those zebra/giraffe/etc blocks in the first photo. Anyone know where to get them nowadays? My son would love them.

Really lovely place, and the sweet puppy too. :) 3 cupcakes for sure.

Is it crazy to admit that I am a woman who does most of the cleaning (if not all) and LIKES it that way? He picks up the kids' toys and empties the dishwasher if I ask, which is nice, but I don't ask very often anymore. I clean better and I am home more often. If he cleaned better or spent more time in the house, he could do more, I guess. He does do the grocery shopping, though, and I love him for that. :)

1200 sq ft, bungalow-ish/cottage-y thing that was originally 2 camps stitched together into one house in the 20s... we're a family of four, including 2 kids under 6 yrs... plus a 70 lb dog (and there were two of those until recently). Works for us as long as we keep tweaking spaces... and we like tweaking. :)

I always wonder why people want to clean rooms that never get lived in, and scrub more than the bare minimum amount of toilets. I grew up in a house 4 time the size of this one and honestly never felt at home until I landed in my first 8 x 8 ft dorm room!

Is it possible that someone in the unit above had some kind of large spill over that spot? It looks like both moisture and sap to me... maybe they spilled something and that got the sap temporarily flowing? It can be so hard to judge from a picture! Good luck!

Seems like cat lovers could put the leaves loose in a small mesh bag and hang it high out of reach... then there would be no falling leaves. Not as pretty, and a little work to de-stem the eucalyptus bunch, but maybe worth it?

...and then you have kids, and your bedroom again becomes your private retreat/escape pod... with a tv, for our purposes. Of course, turn it off and spend some time with your partner, read a book, get your rest, etc... but it sure is handy for a little escape here and there. With a Tivo on board, thank you much. I am always amazed at how people feel oddly incapable of turning a tv off. It's pretty easy, actually, especially in the time of dvrs... I never feel like it HAS to be on unless I really have the time or inclination to really enjoy a program. It's a choice to put it in the room, and a choice to watch it... why do people so often feel like television controls them?
