I do NOT like to be the contrarian... I don't. I hate to critisize, specially a total stranger's home. BUT.... I hate it. It looks like an "Old Navy" store circa 1999.

Commercial Echoes

Some of the spaces in the home feel like a large commercial retail space, like the large parts of a boutique hotel. Not the good (intimate) parts of a boutique hotel. But like the full sized lobby. There are a lot of small interesting ideas that were crammed into the large space. I see they found a spot for Shoji screens! It needs additional editing. It's just too much while not being enough.

Emptiness

At the large lobby of a boutique hotel you are on your way somewhere -- your intimate room, a small restaurant, a meeting, or the bar. There are people and things in motion. At an Old Navy store, there area lot of clothes and there is activity.

This space is a home and without the items for sale or the people in movement -- it feels utterly empty, stale, and just plain WRONG. The cars are comical, again harkening back to the Old Navy of 1999 or a Banana Republic from 1980 (the ones with the Jeeps inside).

Like others, I am also wondering why this house tour is even on AT. Again, I hate to be critical. I am just shocked by how many people like this space.

What a mess. I remember thinking the same things when I first saw this in Met Home. The mirrors are the worst part though, they look like huge versions of the cheap make up mirrors with the fluorescent light around it from the 1980s. The tub is totally in the way. Also, who wants to have a sliding door to the bedroom from the bathroom? It's like they really wanted all the elements and forced it into the small space.

Libraries for lazy people! :-) I give it three weeks. Let's check back in on the spot and see if the bookshelves (which look bolted down) and the books are still there. :-)

I can't resist... I will agree with all the posts that say DO NOT PAINT. For the love of god leave that mantle the way it is. You are very lucky to have one in such a great condition.

To FantasticMrFaux
You stated... "But can we all agree that gypsy is a pejorative? Rom or Romany, if you must."

Actually Gypsy is NOT a pejorative... From Wikipedia:

"The English term Gypsy (or Gipsy) originates from the Greek word Αιγύπτοι (Aigyptoi, whence modern Greek γύφτοι gifti), in the erroneous belief that the Romanies originated in Egypt....

As described in Victor Hugo's novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the medieval French referred to the Romanies as egyptiens. The term has come to bear pejorative connotations. However, use of the word "Gypsy" in English has now become so pervasive that many Romani organizations use it in their own organizational names."

Ugh, I agree with TPGIRL. Why would anyone want to make it look like a gypsies set up in their backyard? What next...a broken Chevy and outhouse to feel like Im in the deep south?

Ohhh great way to make a large room look much smaller. Specially with the light floors. Attracts the eye down to the floor and gives the impression of the room being smaller.

I'd say more like $170 each tops. No offense... but these are mass produced American. The $250-300 is for rarer lower production Danish mid-century items. These are mass produced and not by any particular designer.

They are nonetheless lovely. Keepers for sure, but you aren't going to find any takers at $250 each.

#1 does not work. That's a day bed. In the center of the room... the flat panel is awkwardly in a corner. Huh?!?!

The plug at the feet makes no sense. If you go to the trouble of plugging the board... why not have the plug for the iron up at the top. I have a special outlet at my home...it's up high and made for the iron.

That's cool...not sure how they got around building and fire codes.

What kind of a draft does it get in a Boston winter?

Pretty easy. The TV is a dead giveaway, the color pallette is clearly 90s. The legs of the couch and the stairs say it's at least 1990s. The kitchen cabinet in the distance.

Cool stuff though. It would still be very cool today.

I agree with the post by smoothsailing. I looks like the owner's personal store! I was originally thinking it looked like a TGI Friday's back when they used to have more knick knacks in their restaurants. To me it's just too much clutter. It's visually exciting but after a while a lack of cohesion would drive most people nuts and it would probably make you bored or tired. Not to be harsh. It looks like they put a lot of work into it. Also we should consider it is a work/live space, so looking like a store might not be a bad thing.

Looks horrible. What's the point of this post? Here's the Q: Would it look better without the micro? Answer: Yes, absolutely. Do you want to look at a microwave while you eat?!

This ridiculous video was made fun of on the Daily Show. Not exactly the way we can make enviromentalism accessible to the masses.

The entry states... "this Portland hotel (or motel, depending on the reviews)" -- That does not make sense. Something is either a hotel OR a motel. The word motel comes from the words motor and hotel. A motel allows you to drive up to your room and park your car nearby. A hotel does not. It is not a matter of class or quality.

Although, motels do tend to be cheaper because they cater to car travellers. Just because a hotel is crappy does not mean it should then be called a motel.

Very problematic. Is the storage always supposed to be "out" or "in"? If it is always "in" you then eliminate useable counter space. You walk in with groceries or flowers or mail... how do you place it on the counter? Step one pull our risers/storage, step two - step up, and step three place things on counter. It just doesn't work. I see how he got there with the design but take a reality check and its a dead end.

Heather... now that's a steal.

I know the Eames desk is like $2K at DWR but that's why its Design WITHIN Reach and NOT Design IN Reach... :-) It's within reach if your stop spending on food and housing.
