White, gray or chocolate brown.

Each color is already present in the room, white moulding, gray carpet, brown woodwork. Any of the three colors will enhance what's already there. And all three are neutrals.

Don't be afraid to use chocolate brown with the woodwork. I have an old home with lots of woodwork and I painted my bedroom chocolate brown and it looks really great.

Potted plants in teracotta pots look wonderful. Fall is on the way so you can start with bulbs that bloom in spring like tulips. However, backyard furniture should be on sale. A table and umbrella or an inexpensive tent like gazebo thingy will sheild you from your neighbors.

I always had expensive taste. In my poor days (as you say) I tried to reason with myself about what I could afford. I settled for less expensive items that looked like the original and I was never satisfied and eventually I would get the piece I wanted. In hindsight I wasted alot of money trying to be like my friends and I learned to do it right the first time.

My Advice: Less is more, a few quality pieces makes a statement. Buy what you LOVE, If you're gonna spend $3000 you better love it. Start saving and do your research: when I have a piece in mind I start saving and then research, where can I find the cheapest price, can I find it on craigslist etc. Sometimes I find a good deal before I have the full amount and that's when I ask about layaway. I've put items on layaway with 1/2 down and got them paid in 2-6 months. Also, be patient, there's always a better deal. But don't skimp, do without until you get what you want.

I have a checkerboard floor too and Spanky is right! It's great when clean and it doesn't look clean for long.

Funny, never thought I was breaking the rules. I hate coffee tables. I have two small ottomans and an end table. More versatile

My house is very similiar. 1890 and lots of wood trim. I chose benjamin moore powell buff from this historical colors collection. I think anything from that collection would work. They have some warm creamy whites too.

This is moroccan design as it should be. Simple, elegant, relaxing, beautiful and modern all at the same time. It's my favorite design style and I hope this "moroccan movement" doesn't ruin the spirit of it.

I like the idea but....oversize frames like this one can as expensive as buying a new headboard. It would have to be a design statement not a cheap solution.

I HAD a similar 1960's kitchen. If you don't have the money to buy nice new cabinets DON'T REPLACE them. They are much better than cheap home depot replacements.

My cabinets had a nice wood grain and horribly ugly hardware. I kept trying to live with it but in the end I just couldn't. So I changed the hardware and painted them. I had glass inserted into the doors and it looks like a country kitchen.

However for your home I like the Marmoleum ideas and the icestone countertop. My counter looked like the icestone but it was formica (and really dirty, lol). I chose soapstone for my countertop and I absolutely love it. It looks better with age and it's old fashioned and modern at the same time. I did the DIY option.

I never considered this! I have a roller just like the one above but I was using it to get into tight spaces, like behind my radiators. I have alot more painting to do so I will try this. My shoulders and arms hurt after a day of painting. If this works well it would be great!!
