i think the space is amazing, but as a mom, i wouldn't feel comfortable there with my daughter. however, all parents have different parenting styles. i am the type that has no coffee table (it's a noguchi and the glass freaks me out) or accessories in our living areas. they've all been banished to the garage. i want her to feel free and safe, instead of having to say "no don't touch that, or no don't climb on that" all day long (maybe that's just me projecting).

that aside, it's a gorgeous space and very well done.

i think before you purchase any more furniture, you should purchase a rug. that will ground the room.

i love your couch!!! and the chair at your desk...what an awesome find!! you've done a great job making a strangely shaped space feel welcoming.

love that built in, but it makes me a little sad to see the tuperware. i would have probably covered the glass (from the inside with interesting fabric or paper. it's just a personal thing (i can't stand tuperware, lol).

i think the room needs to be warmed up a little. ikea is a good resource and offers great pieces and prices, but a whole room of it can look a bit sterile. if you don't like color, then try adding a chair with more texture. the room has a great base. love the windows. i really can't see the original artwork you have that well, but the fact that the room looks so matchy matchy kind of takes the view point away from the art anyway. i think the other posters had some good suggestions with changing the placement of things a bit and adding more color/texture. texture can make a big difference. you can have a room filled with all white, and if it has different and interesting textures, it will feel warm.

i live in palm beach, fl and if i kept my AC set at 78 or 85 I think my family and I would just die of heat stroke. we have ceiling fans and keep the temp at 74 during the day and 70 at night while we sleep.

update: i sprinkled a lot of baking soda on it and let it sit over night. just vacuumed it and it doesn't smell anymore. i guess the combo of airing it out and the baking soda did the trick. i'm hoping the smell doesn't come back. if it does, i think it's the result of the fact that we live in a very humid and hot climate (palm beach, fl).

hope this question has helped others!

thanks!

Thanks everyone!

I've contacted West Elm and they said that "to their knowledge" these rugs are not treated with any chemicals. They also said they would make a note of me calling and my complaint and that they suggest I let it air out a little longer, and if I'm not happy they will have it picked up (even if it's after the 30 days). They also stated that they have had issues with rugs in the past. SO BEWARE IF YOU'RE PLANNING ON BUYING ONE FROM THEM OR POTTERY BARN!

Going to try the baking soda tonight.

Keeping my fingers crossed.
Leslie

i'm going to try the baking soda! thanks!

oh and correction, the rug is a wool/cotton blend (about 80% wool)

the rug is 100% wool and has no backing (flat-woven). thanks for the responses! i'm giving it a couple of weeks and if it doesn't stop smelling it's going back to west elm!

amazing! all the natural light makes the woodwork seem lighter and easier to live with (for me). i love the frosted glass floor, although it would freak me out to walk on it.

the skylight was just a genius idea

what a wonderful space! i'd love to snuggle up with a good book in that little alcove!

i had an apartment this small when i first moved out on my own, but it was no where near this sleek or stylish!

i love what you've done with the bedroom. good use of space throughout the apartment. the only negative for me is those awful floors. i lived in nyc and had the same floors and they drove me crazy.

i think it's fun and pretty. my husband wouldn't live in it though and i can't imagine designing a space without his personality reflected in it. it does look like a doll house and it evokes a very nice feeling of nostalgia in me. reminds me of being a little girl. my daughter's room is decorated like this. i enjoy a more sophisticated look, but i think this is fun.

not my style, a little too theme-y, but i think it's a great transformation. i couldn't live here, but i could definitely vacation in a place that looks like this. however, i think the lack of color makes it look like you went to a store like pottery barn and bought everything in one afternoon. looking closely, i see that you have a collection of interesting pieces, but they don't stand out.

great job on the kitchen!

this is by far my favorite statement ever made on apartmenttherapy, "I'm a mere biochemist slash med student, so maybe I have got it all wrong?".

really, who cares?!?!?!

lussuoso, i love the use of coral. haven't braved it in my home. i don't know if my husband would enjoy it =(
thanks for sharing your gorgeous and feminine apartment with us. this was definitely my eye candy of the day.

i like that table with the books used as a base. are the books really holding the table top up, or is it a ledge attached to wall with books stacked beneath?
thanks!
