I love the iPhone app Koubachi (free!). You can register all of your plants, and depending on the type it will tell you when to water, fertilize, etc. It's really handy and sends you push notifications when it's time to water or otherwise care for your plants.

I think it might be out of stock in print right now, but you can find it online at the above link.

This list is BRILLIANT. My husband is obsessive about DVR Zero, although we never achieve it. I want iPhoto Zero, Google Reader Zero, and Inbox Zero, but they are elusive. I tried the email system I saw at Lifehacker-- Archive, Action, Respond, etc.-- but it didn't last.

@AdventRising, no, the goal of Inbox Zero is to have LITERALLY zero messages in your inbox. Everything already read should be deleted, dealt with, or filed.

We also store our Lego in tackle boxes, sorted by type of brick (not color). We have major "creative" builders, so they are constantly mixing and matching pieces from different sets, but they can also rebuild sets because they know exactly where each type of brick lives. You can see the system on my blog: http://remarkablydomestic.com/2010/05/11/tackle-lego-chaos-brilliant-lego-storage/

@mhartman, my desert island baby toy (and kid toy, too!) is stacking cups. Yes, mine are plastic, but you can get them in wood. The ones I have are from First Years, I think, and they have holes in the bottom, each one is a different color, and each one has a number (and the number of holes correspond to the number on the cup). I think the holes are even different shapes (circles, stars, triangles). You can stack them, nest them, play with them in the tub (the water pouring through holes is endless fun)-- we even found a way to spin them like a top. My sons are 7 and 4, and we STILL play with the stacking cups. :-)

That said, I also love companies like Plan Toys who make green toys. Plan Toys has a baby division with some cool stuff. We never tire of Legos, either, and they make Duplos, which are bigger, and even something called Lego Soft bricks, which are even bigger and made out of foam.

I'm interested to hear what other people's favorite good old baby toys are, though, too.

I think I finally figured out the perfect Lego solution: tackle boxes. Customizable-sized compartments where you can store various kinds of Legos. Not only has it cleaned up our family room, it makes it infinitely easier to build something since you can find what you need very quickly. I posted about it here: http://remarkablydomestic.com/2010/05/11/tackle-lego-chaos-brilliant-lego-storage/

I like to make healthy banana bread, with a treat: dark chocolate. The bread has flaxseed and oat bran in it to increase the nutrition. You can see the recipe here: http://remarkablydomestic.com/2009/12/04/moms-banana-bread-updated/

There are also Star Wars pancake molds. I bought them both, and I made the pancakes the next day. You can see them here: http://remarkablydomestic.com/2010/05/26/zomg/

@janeaustenaddict, the seaweed isn't super sturdy, so they'd probably be hard to dip in anything. They are very light and crispy-- even thinner than a regular potato chip. And they come in different flavors. The Sea's Gift ones come in sweet and savory-- my favorite is sweet, which has just a little bit of sweetness and some sesame seeds mixed in. TJ's now carries their own version that is called "Roasted Seaweed Snack"-- it's just seaweed, canola & sesame oil and salt. It tastes a bit fishy, kind of like the ocean, and salty. You have to try them! I think I've seen a version somewhere that is sesame flavor, too, but I can't remember where.

@Nedra, if it makes any difference, the seaweed isn't gooey, it's like potato chips. Green, yes, but crispy like chips. And I suppose it also depends on where you live and what kind of school your child attends. I'm not sure kids at Alice Waters' Edible Schoolyard schools would get made fun of. Yes, that's the minority, for sure. But I don't think it's an absolute.

I agree that it's the adults that get bored. I certainly am the one who is bored with the lunches. But I also want my son(s) to be eating a wide variety of foods so that they get a full array of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals.

@natashah, actually, they are pretty low in sodium. I have some Sea's Gift and some Trader Joe's roasted seaweed snack, and each have only 50 mg sodium per serving. Thanks for asking!

I got this one for Christmas, too, and I LOVE it. I posted about it when I first got it because I was so in LURVE. It really is easy to use, and fresh pasta can't be beat. http://remarkablydomestic.com/2010/01/07/fresh-delish-homemade-pasta/

@jyssilly, I use the one from Martha Stewart's line; you can get it from Michaels & possibly Michaels.com. I locve it because you can punch anywhere, even in the middle
of a huge sheet of paper. And it comes with three different size punches. I'm sure you can find it on her site, too.

Hope that helps!

My desert island baby/kid toy is stacking cups. Sounds ridiculous, no? We stack and nest them, spin them like tops, use them in the bathtub, use them for counting, colors, size... they are so versatile, it's amazing. My boys are 3 and 6 now and we STILL have our stacking cups. I give them as part of baby gifts all the time. Best $3 ever spent!

I've tried several different brands, and my favorite is Snack Taxi. Just behind that, in a close second, is Lunch Skins (http://www.lunchskins.com/home.php).
