I'm with @vonstamp - as a hostess, my goal is for my guests to be comfortable, and I don't care if they wear shoes or not. That said, as a guest in someone else's home, if I have the option to take my shoes off, I will...it's just my personal preference. Everyday vs. Party Time: Should Guests Go Shoe-less? I just read on my iPad. In the darkness, I can turn the screen down to the dimmest setting and still read clearly without spreading too much light. Unfortunately, all my paper books are gathering dust, because I do most of my reading before bed (the library ebook system is getting a workout though). Depending on where you're moving, you may want to find a realtor. We just moved from CA to FL and were not able to afford an exploratory trip. The city we moved to is one of the most dngerous, so we were really unsure about going with craigslist, and husband started work 2 weeks in and we wanted to be well settled by then. Apparently in Florida (and Texas and probably others) the realtor fee is paid for by the landlord or leasing agent, not the renter. So we found a guy that was super helpful and found us a great place from across the country. He also had some good local insight (you can offer lower than the asking rent, for example) that we would never have been able to find or take advantage of otherwise. If your destination state handles realtor fees the same, I'd highly recommend this for out of state moves. How Do You Search for Apartments? |

Interesting data, and the comments are pretty informative, too. We are still living mainly on gifted or hand-me-down furniture, and don't plan on buying any more furniture until we buy our own place. It's not really a financial thing, but more of a priorities thing--I'd rather put all my potential savings toward a down payment at this point. When we do start looking at replacing our mismatched furniture, I'm hoping to find quality pieces that will last a long time, and I'm comfortable splurging a bit on that (not going into debt, but definitely spending more than average). our bedroom isn't off limits per se--it's the only room aside from the bathroom with a door, so our friends will sometimes use it to breastfeed their babies--but people rarely go in even though we leave the door somewhat open. I have, on occasion, let my friends' kids jump on my bed, though (shoes off). It's just too cute. Is Your Bedroom Off-Limits to Guests? |

So excited to see a fellow Davis resident on AT! I love the awesome sunlight you get, and how you used color and pattern to liven up the small space! The Tuttles Make the Most of Student Housing House Call |

anamimi - well said. Even though we haven't taken kid-proofing efforts, none of our belongings are as valuable as time with good friends, hence our open door, bring your whole family policy. :) When Kids Are Coming To Your House |

We welcome children of any age but have not kid-proofed our apartment (aside from closing the bathroom door when toddlers are over), and most of our friends have no problem bringing their kids to our house and letting them play. We have some toy-like items (a nerf football or a stuffed animal here and there), but most kids just really like our rubber-mesh coasters and our exercise ball. Since we live in a small place, there's really only one room for all of us adults (and kids) to play around in, so there's not way their kid would be out of their sight. If it is brand new construction or you know they like to garden, a plant that they can incorporate into their landscape is another idea...my husband favors fruit trees to give (limes for coronas and margaritas in the future). Original Housewarming Gift Ideas | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |

I never even considered attaching legs to a box spring--this is great! We're in a tiny apt, and are holding off on buying any large furniture (trying to make it an easy move out in a few years), but are sick of our metal frame w/ wheels sliding all over the hardwood. I don't have firsthand experience with this, but the gal that lived in my apartment before me negotiated this during her tenancy. We just got the benefit of the wood floors :).
