I would shop around for more price quotes - I got some great deals from local hardware stores here in LA for plexi. They custom cut it, too.

Wow - fantastic job! Especially with that tile in the bathroom - you really complimented it!

Your place is so warm and inviting, I just want to visit and linger over some red wine with bread and cheese! :)

Try it white to highlight the texture. If it doesn't work, 1/4" drywall that mofo. It's easier than you think. Easy on the spackle, kids.

To Two Thirty Five Designs - all of that completely makes sense now that you outline it for us. We would have loved to have read that on your blog - but couldn't get past the unreadable, ridiculous font. You have great content, please change the font so that everyone can read it.

I just tried to read their blog post and my head just exploded from the crazy ass "artsy" font it's written in. Usability, peoples!!!

I prefer the white, btw.

Gorgeous home! Good job on the reno! Cute pups!

@surfjack : we have dark ebony floors in our 1922 bungalow and 2 rescued siberians - one with nails that weren't cut regularly in her previous home so they are longer than normal. As Mara mentioned, the white hair does show - we use a stick vacuum daily. However - regarding scratches, the dark floors actually disguise the damage unless you look at them in super bright sunlight or get down on the floor to see the damage. They are gorgeous and dramatic - go for it! And it actually makes the house look bigger!

Wow, I love apartment therapy but this whole article was super underwhelming. I was hoping to see someone swoop in and do some quick fixes in person. Or at least photoshop something. Or suggest something other than putting a table or a freestanding ikea kitchen cabinet in the rental space - because it most likely WON'T fit in that space (20"?).
If I were the editor, I'd send this back to the writer saying it felt unfinished.

In AT's defense, it IS an apartment. While maybe not our taste, there are certain things we can take away from this. I think the kitchen island is a great idea for a small space. The double overhang with barstools is a cool idea.

Hanging curtains up near the ceiling emphasizes the tall ceilings. I'm going to be redoing my curtain rods soon to move them up.

And also, you can create a warm, old world feel space in new construction.

I totally wanna hate on these rich people with too much money and different taste, but there's really no point in telling people how to spend their own money. And this was an effective exercise in decorating a small-ish (by american standards) space.

Buying a fixer upper house. ;)

Not much DIY experience prior to that, except spray painting furniture and painting walls. I did recently purchase a drill prior to that and had a staple gun. I did a couple of small projects in my tiny apartment, like painting and reupholstering chairs (painted behind my parking spot with tarps).

Excessive viewing of HGTV emboldened me, which was stupid but good. Definitely got us into a house in a neighborhood we couldn't have afforded otherwise!

Lots of Youtube videos and online tutorials helped. Plus, make friends with the crusty old knowledgable old guys at the local hardware store. And follow DIY house blogs like younghouselove.com, etc to give you faith that you in fact CAN do it. Blogs like that gave us the confidence to tackle a bunch of stuff. That, and build up a good chunk of vacation time to tackle everything. It'll take more than you think!

And Home Depot has some DIY classes...

However, leave electrical, plumbing, framing and drywall to the pros!! And rent the right equipment if you don't have it! Most hardware stores rent power tools!

Yup - save money for closing costs. Even if the seller is "including closing costs", there are still impounds for the first couple of months of homeowner's insurance, property taxes, etc. Look up "Good Faith Estimate" online and get an example. Also ask for one from your mortgage pro. Budget at least 2-3% of the cost of the house for closing costs, even if the seller is including closing costs.

BTW, Redfin rocks for looking for homes. Found ours from one of our email alerts. They come in at 6 am-ish, so you can pass by the place on your way to work and possibly do a showing on your lunch break! Hate Trulia, definitely not as user friendly as Redfin.

We have white Caesarstone too (Blizzard). It does stain, but most stains come out with a magic eraser and some diligent scrubbing. It's gorgeous and I love that it's mostly quartz - so we get the modern white look but you get that cold, solid quartz feel.

The Kitchen had a similar article with some good suggetions:
http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/frugality/ideas-on-building-a-barebones-indooroutdoor-kitchen-116087

Here are mine:

We basically camped out in our house during renovations - which took almost a year, in different iterations. For about 3 1/2 months (and lived out of one room in the house), we didn't have a stove or sink - and for over a year, we only had an old fridge in the garage. We also had a microwave and toaster in the garage during that time.

1. Big pan to wash dishes in outside - if you don't have a sink
2. BBQ - preferably with a little side burner
3. Toaster oven - we only had a regular toaster and regretted it
4. Microwave
5. Basket of utensils for 4, tongs, serving spoons, sharp paring knife, bread knife.
6. Set of dishes, bowls and glasses for 4. Definitely wine glasses for 4 - trust me, you'll need these during a renovation, hehe.
7. Spray olive oil - for the bbq
8. Aluminum foil
9. Glad plastic containers for leftovers
10. Spices - chili flakes, small pepper and sea salt grinders, Cavender's Greek Seasoning, sugar.
11. Coffeemaker. I use a Melitta carafe with a filter holder on top and just boil water to pour over it. Keeps the coffee hot - comes in handy when you're trying to keep the contractors awake.

We bbq'd ALOT - we live in Southern California, so while it does get nippy in the winter at night - bbq'ing is always an option. We ate alot of steak, fish, shrimp and chicken seasoned with Cavender's Greek Seasoning - bbq'd on the grill. We also grilled a ton of asparagus on foil, sprayed with olive oil and seasoned with fresh ground pepper and sea salt.

We'd make a meal of the grilled meat, asparagus, fresh tomatoes and avocados. We seriously ate this at least 3 times a week because it was super easy and created the least amount of dishes. We also entertained quite a bit with that meal - our friends were good about eating at makeshift tables on paper plates. I'd also nuke a bowl of seasoned black beans from the can and grill some tortillas on the grill. We always had a bottle of good red wine on those nights.

Some nights, we were too tired after working full time and renovating that we just nuked Lean Cuisines. Or we'd make pbj sandwiches.

The reno was stressful - but we had some great times grilling and drinking during that time. good luck with the house!
