funstraw. i agree with the stove. but we have no other option. there isn't any other space where we can put it without major change and $$$. we can dream, though.

sjbreeze -- thanks so much :)

syrupandhoney -- haha. agreed. what we've done works for us. it may not make sense to everyone else -- esp. as being efficient -- but no one else had to use this kitchen when we moved it. it was a nightmare. and now -- it works out great for us!

molly77 -- very cool. nice to know someone else is dealing with the same challenges!

HurricaneKate -- it's called "arbor vine" from FreshAire (no-VOC).

getting there -- thanks. and that door has a deadbolt, a lock, a chain, and another storm door with a lock outside it . . . ???

messyjessy -- thanks! i got some of the tea towels from urban outfitters (the one with the bird, and i have others), and the other is from Target.

Britomart -- right? i'm nervous, too. anyway -- happy to help! :)

thanks, everyone, for your kind comments!

obviously, Palmetto, the "tricks" i play aren't directed at people who have specific dietary restrictions (my grandfather is diabetic and my father has heart issues -- and i would NEVER think to make anyone ill -- that's just wrong!). i'm terribly sorry you took that the wrong way.

about the island blocking the cabinets. this is actually efficient . . . because we don't use those cabinets. at all. because they are totally open to the floor with no shelves in them. and before we moved in, they had the refrigerator blocking them . . . so, the island gives us far more storage and work space than the cabinets ever would. this also means we don't need to slide it back and forth for access. no scratches.

as far as how the vinyl flooring is holding up -- so far, well for us. we've had no problems. i have read the reviews, and i think people run into issue when they install the flooring in damp areas like basements.

Ilovebutter: Believe it or not, we got it at K-mart on clearance! It's from the Martha Stewart Collection, but I don't think they have the same one available anymore . . . it's worth checking out, though :)

Hi, Patyy -- This is our kitchen. Anyway, we got the basket at Target, I believe. Not sure if they have the same one right now, but it's worth checking out :)

We have SO MANY of these in our kitchen. We love how they look, so we've been reusing them for our bulk food storage . . . as planters for small flowers . . . and just as plain decorative items.

Love this post!
