Another con: they have a required minimum flow to trigger the heater. If you aren't using enough hot water, it won't turn on. Translation: ours ended up being basically incompatible with the low-flow shower head we had. We'd already spent $$$ on the heater and having it installed, so we switched to a shower head that uses more water. Not exactly environmentally friendly. (That said, I still love ours.)

In all honesty, as mean as it sounds, sometimes the food is THE WHOLE POINT of a gathering for me. So I just don't invite my veggie friends when I want to roast a duck or grill a bunch of oysters. Even the one who happily brings her own sustenance. Sometimes I want to focus on, talk about, revel in the food. I don't want someone sitting there eating something else. Just like we don't invite our teetotaler friend to go wine tasting with us.

Of course, sometimes the food is not the point and the company is. But when I am focused on the cooking, I really appreciate my like-minded food friends...

Here's my waste-free method for greens:
-buy a head of lettuce naked and bring it home in a reusable shopping bag
-wash and chop it as soon as I get home
-load it into a big pyrex bowl with lid
-put a clean, lint-free kitchen towel on top
-store in the fridge UPSIDE DOWN (where the towel will absorb any runoff...the damp towel then keeps things crisp)
-switch out the towel if it gets too wet (rarely)

Greens usually don't linger more than a week in our house, so I don't know if this would keep them longer than that, but it definitely keeps them crisp and contained that long. For herbs, I rinse and store in a small container lined with a towel on bottom

@CKAL - Ditto to the airplane sounds in White Noise Lite!

@DOITYERSELF - I find it's the closest thing to a fan noise that isn't actually a fan. :)

But I've actually switched to the brown noise in Simply Noise's app.

Anything with more noticeable characteristics than that - waves, rain, crickets - drives me nuts!

Have a back-up plan to keep your life on track even if your renovation veers off the rails! The freezer we ordered ended up on back order for 6 months and our old freezer didn't fit in the newly renovated kitchen. That ended up meaning 6 months of the big old freezer in the middle of our living room because we had gone in on a side of grass-fed beef with our neighbor and had to have a freezer.

@Amanda0730: Reading your #2 made me physically anxious. I must eat the most abundant color first, just until it's even with the next. Then I eat those two until even with a third, etc, until I have an even number of each color. Then I eat one of each, keeping the established order. My husband thinks it's so werid.

@hopperodyssey: You are very sweet. Thanks for the smile.

When I was a kid, I used to LOVE sandwiches of kraft singles with yellow mustard on white bread. I can't stand it anymore, so that's probably the only reason I know it's weird. I do lots of the things people have listed without realizing they were unusual. :)

What a fascinating thread!

Stocking up only makes sense if it's something you'll use, so I would just get a lot of whatever I normally buy...probably plus a couple new things that are just fun to try while they're on sale (the splurge category you mention). But don't "stock up" on things you don't normally buy. There's probably a reason you don't normally buy them...

A brilliant design that shows a lot of ingenuity. (Though, like Jenn, I wouldn't buy it while made of virgin plastic.)

But one thing made me giggle. The description says you can use it "anywhere a laptop was meant to go", but I really can't imagine ever using it on my lap, which is arguable exactly where a lap top was meant to go. Just saying.

Well, I mean, I understand the objections raised here, but isn't the natural sea salt you buy in stores harvested straight from the ocean, too? I think you're just counting on the heat to kill anything in the water and for the traces of other minerals to be pretty small. I'm not sure I'd go to the trouble of making it, but I think I'd eat it.

Oh gosh. I just planted a small mint plant in my yard this morning. Do I need to dig it up and put a terracotta pot around it?

If it matters, I put it in a small strip of yard between our outdoor stairs and the foundation of our house. The strip of yard is only a couple feet wide and generally faces lots of erosion. I was putting herbs there this year to try to get better groundcover than grass.

I think the key to answering the question is to know more about the writer's motivation.

If she wants to have them over because she likes to host and would rather stay at her own house, then maybe the she does owe it to herself to take the more confrontational route and bring it up directly with the friends.

But if, as she says in her letter, it's really more about a feeling of guilt and perceptions of fairness, I'm in the camp that friends don't keep score. If you're having fun going, go. They keep inviting you, so they're certainly not offended. Take a nice bottle of wine or something with you if that makes you feel like you're pulling your weight.

Who knows what their reasons are for perferring to host than to go out. By asking them point blank, you may risk making things awkward.

If you really want unbreakable, how about metal?

You could go with good old campware like this:

Or invest in stainless like this:
