So silly. Its a shame with people fall for these pseudoscience claims. Correlation does not equal causation and all that jazz... remember folks. P.S. the Daily Mail isn't known to be the most reputable/respected of news sources...

On the Consider your Breed section I would add that large doesn't necessarily mean more active. We adopted a greyhound and they're very low energy most of the time. A lot of people consider them "cat dogs" and their nickname is the 45 mph couch potato.

I think one key thing to keep in mind is the dog's age. Ours was 2 when we adopted him so he has more energy than your typical greyhound (they're usually adopted around 4 years or so) but that's great for us cause we're big explorers and hikers. So I would not only consider breed but also age. If you're thinking about getting a dog but worried about the house training side of things and/or energy level an older dog might be great for you.

Plus everyone seems to want puppies so a lot of wonderful older dogs (meaning any dog no longer in the "puppy stage") are i shelters and rescue organizations in need of homes. Many of them already come house trained if they've been fostered ahead of time.

Just a friendly plug for adoption and rescue dogs!

Definitely live in a small apartment (< 800 sq. ft. bottom floor of a house) and definitely have to shovel our own sidewalks, driveway, etc... I don't see why one should assume snow removal is restricted folks in the suburbs... Although we live in a relatively medium-ish sized city it's not like we're out in the boonies somewhere. And here in Wisconsin where we get a decent amount of snow shoveling is great exercise! We also try to avoid the salts for our pup's sake.

For what it's worth, it's extremely difficult to get the slip covers on and off the Karlstad sofa. Boyfriend and I have one (not a sleeper so perhaps this makes a difference?) and we have to unscrew and take apart the body of the sofa (3 main pieces) to get the main slip cover on and off. Very annoying and I can't help but think the sofa is a little less sturdy each time we do it. Just an FYI...

I just decided to embrace my boyfriend's lego collection and hockey memorabilia. The legos get their own little closet/nook and the hockey stuff was all nicely framed and scattered about the apartment with other types of artwork.

How about entitling this post "9 Housewarming Gifts for Couples" instead? I feel that its a bit archaic to assume most couples are only now moving in together once they're married. And let's not forget about folks who cannot legally get married where they live due to bigoted state laws... it's the 21st century man.

This is beautiful! Bummer on the mosquitos- they've been especially bad this summer I think. Oh how I wish we had a yard. It's on wish list for our next West Philly apartment...

We were really up front with potential landlords about the fact that we have a cat and are in the process of adopting a dog. I'm not going to lie- the "we want to adopt a rescued dog that weighs over 50 lbs" did hurt our chances at several places in Philly. When we finally found a place willing to consider us + our pets we wrote our cat and future dog (by breed type and average weight) into the lease very specifically to ensure there wasn't any misunderstanding down the road..

I agree with pretty much everyone above. Move the bed out of the corner and in between the two windows. Then use rugs to define distinct spaces in your bedroom- office space, sleeping, dressing, etc based on what space is left.
Its a lovely apartment- enjoy!

I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of the "post warmers" I see on bike racks or parking meters here in West Philly. It seems like a waste of yarn. But I do appreciate the quirky, fun intentions of their creators.

Reminds me waay too much of a couple dorm rooms I had in college. I don't see why this is so amazing? I lived like this (slightly bigger rooms) for 3 years of my life. 2 of those with a roommate. We had a mini fridge, microwave and sometimes an *illegal* george foreman grill. Granted we didn't make ALL of our meals there but we did have parties/sleepovers with 10+ folks...

Kinda sad someone said stay out of north Philadelphia. Parts of North Philly are fine, others not. All cities are like that. I love Uhuru Furniture which has already been mentioned. Craigslist is not bad in Philly (just bought a table tonight in fact) but I suggest being willing to drive (we rent Zipcar) to the mainline and parts of NJ or DE to pick up items. I've found my best items at garage/house sales all over the city. Boyfriend and I will walk there and then if we find something we really like, arrange to pick things up later. There's also a West Elm in the city and a couple Ikea stores not to far away as someone already mentioned. Welcome to Philly!

The cat definitely sleeps with us. Well he sleeps anywhere he wants. Sometimes its on the foot of the bed- typically on my feet because the boyfriend will move him to my side of the bed. We tried shutting the bedroom door at night (boyfriend has allergies) and the cat scratched and pawed half the night. Its not worth trying to keep him out.
