Our bedroom is more than half the square footage of our small (underr 300 sq ft) apartment.

My boyfriend, if he could, would live full-time in a hotel. We put the chaise longue from my tiny studio (a TYLÖSAND chaise from ikea) under the bay windows to give the room a "boutique hotel" vibe, and are really happy with how it balances out the space. Of course, our new king-sized bed is nice, too!

I actually just discovered an online resource that sells curtains for between ninety-nine cents and thirty bucks a panel! Unfortunately, they don't have anything that will work on my crazy-tall bay windows.

My project this summer was painting our four Windsor/farmhouse-style wooden chairs (hand-me-downs from boyfriend's mom) a violent orange.

No sooner did I finish than I'm seeing brightly colored wooden chairs EVERYWHERE. Love it.

markbright's "use commercials" tip is spot-on. It's amazing how many dishes you can wash, clutter you can clear, etc. in the space of one commercial break.

Another good rule-of-thumb is never leave a room empty-handed.

Also, if my washing machine is working, I am, too. It's an enforced half-hour of cleaning, and it's amazing how quickly you can get things done when you don't think about how much you dread those tasks.

Also, thinks about what isn't necessary: we don't make our bed everyday (dust mites love neatly made beds!); I don't let cut flowers into my home because they shed and I hate watching things die.

Also, when you do a powerclean, go from high surfaces to low surfaces, starting in one area and moving clockwise (or counterclockwise) around the room. It goes quicker, you don't get sidelined by other tasks, and you can see actual awesome progress as you go round.

I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH: get a door security bar. Surprised it hasn't been suggested yet.

It's a metal rod; one end fits under your doorknob, and the other braces against the floor when you are home. Here's a video of one in use (I'm not promoing this company, but it is a TV ad): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luC_NnyMB1I

They are less than $20, work like a deadbolt, and really work. My dad got me one when I lived on my own for the first time.

And that studio apartment - which was on a fourth floor in a great safe neighborhood, with a deadbolt, did get robbed one day when I was at work. I was super-grateful, in the day or two before the deadbolt was replaced, that I had that bar.

Limiting myself to just home stuff (so no clothes, people, pets, etc), I made two lists. One is things I do and must have, the other is things I want and must have.

Haves
1. Kitchenaid stand mixer
2. dishwasher!
3. MacBook Pro
4. king sized BoConcept Fahrenheit memory-foam mattress
5. giant faux-bamboo dresser
6. paintings and art prints by my boyfriend and me in every room and hallway
7. burr (not blade!) coffee grinder and a giant french press
8. Tivoli Model Two radio
9. color! (especially cool grey, orange, and yellow)
10. cast iron frying pans (you can't improve on a classic)

Wants
1. Nelson swag-leg desk
2. stainless steel or granite countertops (for prepping baked goods)
3. dedicated studio space (room for my grandfather's drafting table)
4. white rectangular restaurant-style dishes
5. black & white chevrons painted on a hardwood floor (the black lodge!)
6. Jonathan Adler orange Nixon throw
7. Jonathan Adler "Sins" throw pillow
8. heavy-duty citrus juicer (countertop kind with the big manual lever handle)
9. grow house grow wallpaper (Mrs. Ward in Wedgewood or Milkweed)
10. a Thomas Wold dresser (or knockoff)

I've only read the Cure book, but it definitely is geared more toward tailoring a space that you've been living in for a while accommodate to your current and future needs. You really NEED to (a) be familiar with your space (b) have discovered solid "pain points" to ameliorate, and (c) be mostly-completely settled in your apartment to do a cure successfully. It would just be too stressful (for me) to deal with during a move.

My impression is that the Small, Cool book would probably be better way for inspiring you as you create a fresh space (no pics in the Cure!).

I'd recommend you go with Small Cool right now while you're in process of researching/acquiring initial move-in things, and invest in the Cure once you've been in your place for six months to a year.

That type of typography that reads the same forward/back or upside-down/rightside-up is called an ambigram.

Take that word to the google. Should give you a good start.

Last year everyone went gaga for Jenna Lyon's clever repurposing of a tall bookshelf for shoe storage; I've seen several variants on this.

@Joan - I actually have what I call my "black box" - a black "leather" hinged box from Staples meant for storing CDs on an office desk. I keep pads, tampons, and pantiliners in it. Great when a gal-pal's over and in need!

Also, instead of buying a fancy bottle for lotion, I just peel off the branded label on my lotion bottle. Both can be seen in this pre-Spring Cure pool pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/48522199@N03/4444289626/in/pool-1399880@N22

in agreement with k. I recall that all/most of the house tours used to include floor plans, and that seems to have been discontinued in the past year of two. Bring 'em back!

Living in the Northeast, my #1 deal breaker is windows.

After living in an older building (gorgeous! two floors! built-ins! balconies! 200 sq.ft. kitchen!) where the heating bill often exceeded rent, if windows aren't weatherproof and less than 5 years old, it doesn't matter what the place looks like, how big it is, or the location.

More messy than cleansing: The first thing I do in a new apartment is buy ingredients for chocolate chip cookies: a kitchen's not really a kitchen unless it has eggs, sugar, flour, butter, etc. in it!

Try This! Traditional Rituals to Clear Out Bad Home Energy

I mean, that medicine cabinet's squickily old-fashioned, too. It's not even fun-kitsch, it's like irony-free bad 80s country-cupboard style.

So pick colors you love and can live with for the linens. Don't let the unfixable fixtures decide for you.

And here's a thought: treat it like a diner bathroom if you'd like to inject kitsch.

Go to ebay or etsy, and buy some old "men's magazines." Not Playboy (unless you're okay with it; I think old pinups are completely adorable), but men's mags like "Man's Life" or "Stag" from the 1950s and 60s that have cover articles with titles like "I Survived a Giant Otter Attack!" and "The Red Plan to Conquer America!" and "Man-Hungry Hussy of She-Devil Island!"

Frame them. Pick covers, or story pages, or full-page images, or even advertisements. Whatever makes you chuckle to yourself. Hang 8-14 in your bathroom. En masse. Everyone will love it, and no one will notice the tiles.
