We do bedtime stories on our own bed and then our son climbs into his bed. His previous bed was too small for an adult so it's the same routine we've always had. The height is really nice for talking to him and tucking him in at night.

@SarahRose sorry, just seeing your comment now! But for anyone wondering, it is just as much fun in repeated plays because there are probably at least 20 different things that you look for and multiples of each thing (traffic cones, brooms, numbers, etc.) so you rarely find them all the first time and I never remember where they are from time to time so it's always a new challenge. The drawing on the 6ft. long board is super detailed as well.

We do this as often as possible. If you go through the archives of Design Evenings (http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/categories/design_evenings) you will find them within the posts.

@ma912 yes - it's threaded! which wouldn't seem like such a big deal unless you've owned one that isn't and had all the contents tumble onto your carpet or car!

Not only did I never request a catalog and can't recall having once shopped there, but I used the online form last March to be removed from their catalog list and still got one this time around. In fact, I got two.

I like to bring tomato-based, homemade pasta sauces (with pancetta or sausage, etc. if the friend is a meat eater). They freeze so well and can be ready in as little time as it takes to cook pasta. I've also brought soups like sweet potato chowder (to freeze if they like). I think it's helpful to bring food when the baby is a few weeks old rather than right away since they usually have more help in the beginning, one parent has usually returned to work at this point, and the sleep deprivation will really be starting to set in after the first few weeks.

@Ninaetc I think you misunderstand me. I agree that sometimes the cheapest, "junkiest" toys get the most play and provide the most enjoyment to kids. The car track I'm writing about above would be no better if it were wooden and expensive. The problem is that it's totally impractical for our home because of it's size and the time it takes to assemble and that you can't really play with it, only watch it. This same post could have been written about a "high end" toy.

Just a reminder to readers that our Main channel is a collection of posts from across all of our channels, this one, as you'd guess, from the Family channel. As regular readers know (even if you don't like it), we talk about many more things than "design" here including purchases.

@3CROW I can more easily understand how kids are drawn to classic themes like animals and cars because they are so easily observable almost no matter where you live. But the idea of pirates, for example, is something they are introduced to through books or tv or products. My point is - are kids truly drawn to pirates or might they be as interested in, I don't know, vikings? or gladiators? Are pirates more popular because they're more interesting to kids or because pirate books, tv shows, products are much, much more available?

While we always welcome reader feedback, I'm not sure where many readers got the idea that Apartment Therapy is *only* about designing a home. It's about living in it too. I would also say that the topic of this post is certainly design related. I've never been put on bedrest, but if I were I could imagine rearranging my bedroom - perhaps to accomodate my son's little work table. Or, perhaps I would change up the living room so I could rest comfortable and also supervise my son while he played. You get the idea.

Since there's been some discussion about how much difference here is in the photography, I thought I'd add that the only Before photo the designer had was smaller than the 540 width we run our photos and I did enlarge it a bit which further degraded the quality. So, yeah, sure there is definitely a difference in the quality of the photos but I think we can all agree that the physical changes made to the room are a big improvement.
