Oh how I wish I could do this in our kitchen! We have original 1950's metal cabinets. Not possible to attach drawer slides to either the sides or the shelf, as any attachment hardware will stick out right through the steel. And our lower cabinets are all small deep dark caverns, which would be so very much improved with roll out access...

I'd don't suggest adding parraffin to bird food - it is a petroleum product and has no food value. I'd think that mixing the bacon fat with bird seed and perhaps some bread crumbs would work better.

for almost all of the uses you mentioned, I simply place a saucer or a plate (whatever is appropriate in size ) on top of the bowl or the container...no need for any kind of extra product

I had a student friend who wanted drawers under her bed, and what she ended up doing was super inexpensive. She got old wooden dresser drawers (that were a good height to fit underneath) and put casters on the bottoms. I think she also put rope loops on them instead of the drawer knobs, so they were easier to pull out from underneath. She had a double bed, so had these drawers on each side.

The best pickled ginger I had was colored pink with the leaves of the red shiso plant, the same one that gives umeboshi plums their red color. I steeped some of the leves in rice vinegar, and if ever the grocery gets in some young ginger, I'm going to make some.

Anyone have any sources for metal canning jar lids that are not made with BPA? I do a lot of home canning, and all the jar lids I can find are either Ball, or Kerr both of which have BPA* I don't want to throw away all our jars and start over with Weck jars.

I don't understand the problem with having a mirror over the stove - to me it seems lovely to be able look up and see reflected in the mirror the scene outdoors. While their kitchen is bigger than any room in my house, it doesn't seem impractical, even if it is not my style.

And why are people always saying that anything over the stove will be dirty immediately? I don't think I am a particularly "tidy "cook; I have framed pictures over our stove, and while I do need to clean the glass a few times a year, they aren't covered in splattered food and grease - and yes, dinner is cooked on that stove every day, and breakfast too.

Donate them to a homeless shelter for families. They might not be as "green" as you would like, but compared to not having anything, they would make a big difference!

Jose A, and anyone else who is interested, the design was published in Nomadic Furniture by Victor Papanek and Jim Hennesey in 1973. The book is full of wonderful DIY projects, and thinking about design; it seems to be readily available used from online sellers

While it is possible to can baby food, I do not know of anywhere that makes replacement lids that would allow you to re-use the manufactured jars. Most factory canned foods are not made in jars that are intended for re-use, and their lids are definitely not intended for re-use. I would suggest investing in some widemouth 4 oz canning jars, which are intended for repeated use. This size jar would be a small enough size for baby foods, but takes standard type canning lids. Please don't take chances with food safety. The 4 oz jars are readily available online, and some hardware stores carry them
