In our "new" house (an 1885 Victorian, actually), my daughter very heroically agreed to let her brother take the brighter, prettier bedroom when we offered to paint the other one the color of her choice. She chose a light green which looks great with the white molding. To keep her room as bright as possible (she has one north-facing set of windows) and to avoid covering the gorgeous period trim (and, um, because we haven't gotten around to it yet) there are no curtains or window-coverings of any sort in her room, despite the view into the neighbors' messy back yard and of the sign for the convenience store around the block. I would love to use this window film for the bottom half of her double-hung windows - it would give her the privacy that 12-year olds deserve without obscuring the charm of the room the the beautiful, if indirect, northern light. PLANTS. How about a small tree on a stand, or a tiered plant shelf? I think plants add lushness to minimalism (unless you create a jungle, or course.) Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: What Should I Do With This Corner? |

I'm not the messiest baker, but lately we've instituted "dinner nights" with the children - each kid is the head chef for dinner one night per week. Last week my 9 year old and I were making snickerdoodles for dessert, and his style is to alternate between being maniacally careful, pouring in the granulated sugar one grain at a time, and extremely careless, pouring the flour in fast, one big POUFF!. The eggs, oh, the eggs. We also make a lot of pancakes and the pouring is always a disaster (for the pancakes, the counter, the mixing bowl, the child's fingers, AND the stove!). We'll take any help we can get! Apartment Therapy - Thursday Giveaway: Pourfect Spill-Proof Bowls |

Portland, Oregon - just moved into a duplex with my fiance, approximately 1400 square feet. My ex lives upstairs! Between the two households we have three kids, three adults, and a law office in a 2600 sq ft building. The kids have their own rooms for the first time ever. How Cramped is Your Castle? |
