These are great comments. I beleive that most parents out there are looking for a room that is just for their child - from a stimulating mobile to creating an interest in books and maintaining an effective storage setup - regardless of what's "in". But I also I think there are others out there who are more interested in making sure their nursery is repinned 12,000 times even if it means using an antique crib with 5" gaps and lead paint.

(I agree with the pirate thing. We celebrated the Mayflower and other sea explorers, and we call them sailors.)

Have you seen the coffee tables with the raising top?

We have one (without built-in storage, just 4 legs and a top) that is a good height for storage bins underneath. We have small stools for the kids (that also push underneath) and cushions for the adults that sit on the sofa when not used. This table is quadruple duty: adult-time coffee/wine & cheese table, kids play table, family dining table, and...raise it up to a chair or sofa and it's a desk. Fold-up doll houses and wooden train tracks each get a bin underneath. Stools go underneath. Voila, multifunction.

We've had this thing SO long and it's so abused, but we can't let it go because it's SO FUNCTIONAL. We bought ours from a discount place 10 years ago for a reasonable price, <$300.

As for space saving ideas, go for a swag lamp (with plenty of head room) that hangs over the sofa instead of a floor lamp that sucks up valuable real estate?

I agree that Ikea has a lot of inexpensive solutions. If you're looking for transitional items until you have a more permanent place, this is a good option.

Best of luck to you!

Two awesome things caught my eye here:

1.) The Very Hungry Caterpillar's Monday through Friday meals stamped with what looks like the real item - FANTASTIC idea.

2.) The mesh wastebasket housing wrapping paper. I'm stealing this one.

Nice job. Care to comment on how the floor has been so far? We have a similar eyesore of a floor and I'd like to do something in the meantime of waiting for a remodel.

I LOVE the idea of covering juice boxes - trying to think about how to do that without removing the straws. (I know that the glass blottles are vintage and "green" but lots of parks/party places don't allow it.)

I just saw a tumbling mat on overstock for <$100. Don't remember the deets, but it might be flexible to grow with him.

I didn't see the show, but I'm going to make a point to watch it now. I can think of lots of pros and cons to extreme couponing. But I agree with what someone else said that it's only a matter of time before coupon policies change to prohibit this.

I was JUST thinking about this today. I want a recipe for a carrot bread that I can use for french toast and top with cream cheese icing.

We use a dresser too and I like it better than hanging clothes.

The real key, for us, is to only store in there what your little one can (and will) wear. If grandma pulls out a lime green shirt and burgundy pants, at least you know that it fits and is season-appropriate.

Also, we have 2 bins for the closet: one for the next size up and an empty one for things that are too small. If something is too small, you immediately have a place to put it instead of thinking that eventually you need to clean out those dresser drawers.

We have one big drawer for every day - right now, it's pants "rolled" up in columns on the right, long sleeved shirts on the left.

The other big drawer is for pajamas and specialty clothes: swimsuits, short-sleeved shirts, flannel-lined overalls, sweaters, vests.

We have 2 small drawers on the top. One is for socks, the other is for miscellanous stuff.

We have a shelf above the changer for diapers. No opening, stepping away from the changer, etc. Just reach up, get a diaper. Wipes are on the changer. We keep a basket of other stuff (creams, boogie wipes, lotions that we need less often) up with the diapers. Very soon s/he will be long enough to kick stuff off, so having things out of reach is key.

I did the exact same thing (poms/lanterns in the corner with the 3M Command hooks) because I was uneasy about putting them all directly over the crib and potentially falling in. This is a lovely version in pink and white.

Yes, do stock up on bottled water! September is Emergency Preparedness Month. You can survive for 3 weeks without food, but only 3 days without water. But as Katiekills was alluding to, just don't go sucking it down out of laziness.
