Black garage doors would give a stately kind of feel to the front of the house. especially if you accented other areas with touches of contrasting black. Like the shingles eventually. and those shutters, if they aren't already black.

I was going to say church pew! But I see others have beat me to it. It may not fit the vibe of this space very well, but would be good and convenient seating without encouraging loitering or suffering stains/rips in the upholstery.

Does anyone know where you can buy replacement spouts for these? I have two but the spouts are terrible and it takes over a minute to fill a small glass. Help!

I would start with replacing the floor and see where that leads you.

I am always pro-paint, if that's what the person wants, but if you were interested in preserving the wood cabinets, I agree with the other commenters who suggested that you could probably find a way to work with these as they are if you wanted to. Updating hardware would make a huge difference.

IKEA sells live myrtle balls, which look a lot like the boxwood ones. except they have a tall thin trunk, so they are more like a little tree with a round top.

I agree with Aninhas. Tent the top 1/3 or so of your bed with fabric that you swag across the ceiling and down on the other side of the bed. I've tried to hide doors in my apartment and unless you have the space to put large pieces of furniture in front of it, I think this is your best bet.

How about installing a dimmer switch? You could also try getting those "pastel" light bulbs. They have a warmer tone and are less stark.

I often like the look of painted brick, but in your case I think the brick is a nice feature since it's not an entire wall of dark brick. It adds a nice history and weight to the room in my opinion.

I would start by painting the panelled wall to lighten things up and see how that changes things.

Painting over the wood paneled wall might give the built ins a chance to shine as well. If darker wood is "your thing" then staining them darker might be a nice complement to your decorating style. If you stain the built in cupboards I would consider staining the mantel the same shade (or painting it or even getting a new mantel).

Painting the panelling behind the built ins the same colour as the other walls might add some cohesion and brighten things up as well.

I agree with misssarahjessica. You could turn the top row into open shelving by removing the cabinet doors and paint the rest of it either white or the colour of the walls to help it recede. That would have a huge impact in terms of creating some visual space.
