New paint. In my case, this is wall and ceiling paint in medium and intense shades of cheddar. My tiny kitchen gets north light, which is bluish. When everything was painted white the room became broody and morose in winter. The new colors knock the depression right out of it. 10 Easy, Low-Budget Ways to Improve Any Kitchen (Even a Rental!) |

My anthropology prof (whose specialty was historical archaeology) and his wife had a kitchen much like this. I think it had a lot more wooden things, though. An Archeologist's Kitchen in ItalyKitchen Tour |

I rather like it the way it is. I'm getting Scandinavian vibes from it. The chair in the corner looks cozy, and I really doubt if anyone would hit their head because a person doesn't stand straight up from that kind of chair. Were it mine, I might introduce some medium-to-dark gray for contrast plus one small vibrantly-colored thing. Ideas for Decorating Under-Stair Nook? Good Questions |

I, too, see intense colors for this. Off-black, navy blue, chile-pepper red. Of course it's easy for me to say since I'm not the one who will be doing the work! How To Spruce Up Craigslist Vanity? Good Questions |

If I don't subscribe I don't know what I'm missing and I don't accumulate. What I do keep (Fiddler, Saudi Aramco World - has the greatest colors ever, blacksmith periodicals, and a box of 1970s Sphere) I keep organized. When and if I move, it will be easier to deal with them. What I regret not keeping: women's magazines from the 1940s and 1950s that I didn't value at the time they were available to me. I grew up in a semi-rural part of western Oregon, with parents who grew up rural. The rural life seemed ideal, so I went to a college with agricultural roots in a small town. I loved it. After a stint in Denver, which I did not care much for, I have managed to live either rural or semi-rural. Full-on rural didn't pan out so well for me - I found that prefer a different sense of community, where I can see people if and when I want to, but I know I could live fairly isolated if I weren't surrounded by arch-conservatives. I could be totally happy with the Northern Exposure existence, and in fact that's approximately what my tiny Colorado mountain burg is like. Yes, I need a car to get "to town". So what?
