I have a small upright freezer and I love it. I use it to store homemade chicken stock and tomato sauce, extra bread and rolls, ice cream, etc. We considered a chest freezer, but uprights are much easier to see into and organize if you're vertically-challenged, like I am. :-)

If you're in the Bay Area, Belmont Hardware (several locations) has an amazing selection of knobs, pulls, locks and other hardware, in a myriad of styles and colors.

For my appliances and other large purchases like furniture, I keep a binder of the manuals, receipts, repair work, etc. It's really handy when I need to look up something or just to answer a question like what year the repair was done.

You can also use a baby carrot as a stylus! Try it - it totally works, although I have no idea how and why.

Short videos or a pictorial on tips and techniques would be great, with inclusion on using your senses and examples. For example, a video on how to make a roux, and a detailed explanation of how you know when it's done (e.g., what does it look like, how does it smell and taste, what exactly does it mean when they say roux is done when it no longer smells raw). Another example -- if you're making mayonnaise or hollandaise, show me what it looks like when the sauce has broken.

To follow up on Karaakins' request on harvesting herbs, it would be great to see the focus on common herbs like basil, parsley, cilantro, thyme, oregano, etc. In particular, how do you know when to cut them, where on the plant do you cut them, what does "bolting" and "going to seed" mean and can you show me what it looks like, is it bad if the plants are flowering, etc.

One of my favorites is a Rose' for only $4.99! It's called Quinson Fils Cotes de Provence Rose'. It's pale pink and lighter body, perfect for a warm day. (Although I drink it during the winter, too.) It reminds me of the rose's served at cafes in the south of France. I'm in Northern California, so I don't know if it's sold in the East.

Thank you for this post! I've always wondered exactly what acidity in wine is and how to describe it.

I second the Bionaturae brand of whole wheat pasta. Texturewise, it is the closest to white pasta that I've tried, and I've tried many whole wheat brands. It is a little more expensive than the Whole Foods or Trader Joe's brands, so I try to buy it on sale or or at Amazon.

Here's another recipe for grilled buffalo wings. I always marinate the wings per his recipe. And I often skip the hot wing sauce at the end. Yes, they would taste better with the sauce, but they're pretty darned good without it.

I've also baked these in the oven.

No, I don't trust these sites and that's why I don't use them. But I have to wonder - is the concept of these sites all that different from other sites where our data is stored on third party servers? For example, Yahoo mail and Gmail are stored in the cloud, and emails can contain a huge amount of personal and sensitive data. Yet you don't hear much about security concerns there. What is the difference?

Anita83, do a search on the Cookware forum of Chowhound. There was recently discussion about the copper cookware from Homegoods/TJ Maxx. In fact, there are a lot of posts about copper.

Wonderful kitchen, Amanda! Thanks for sharing with us. Quick question - I noticed the dishwasher isn't immediately to the right of the sink but has drawers in between. Has that been an issue that the dishwasher is a couple of steps further away, and was there a specific reason for placing it there? Thanks!

I use the PepperMate mill whenever I need a teaspoon or more. It works really well. I first saw it used by Ina Garten on The Barefoot Contessa.

Excellent article. Thank you! Since I live in California and mostly know this state's wines and the main varietals, I can't express any opinions on the difference between New World and Old World wines. But I would love to learn more about the differences between the characteristics of certain grapes. For example, I know that Burgundy is made from the Pinot Noir grape. But how does that differ from California (or even Oregon or other regions) Pinot Noir. Your Sauvignon Blanc example was a great illustration of this.

I often eat yogurt weeks after the expiration date. They've never smelled "off" or caused me any problems.

For most foods, I'm willing to go past the expiration date if the package is unopened (even things like lunch meat). But once I've opened it, I'm much more careful and am more likely to toss.
