Ahhh...people are so funny...everyone likes to search out reasons to get their panties in a ruffle over such minute matters and debate their point of view. Cool house...not my style but it looks like you have created a little slice of heaven for yourself and your family and that is really all that matters : ) I am sorry...am I not allowed to say heaven?

I just recently heard a Grahm Nash interview in which he talked about the song "Our House" and the day spent with Joni that inspired him to write it. I have always loved the song, and tried to imagine what this very, very, very fine house looked like! My imagination did it NO justice, as the warmth, coziness and love that exudes from this home far exceeds what I imagined! Thank you for sharing this magical space!

This house looks a lot like the home my husband and I purchased five years ago!! We also call it the "Brady House"! Ours has light yellow siding and had a similar front stair, but no awning (I am with the ditch the awning commenters here). We jackhammered away our front stair and built a low profile front deck/stairs in mahogany. We have been renovating the home bit by bit and are doing all the work ourselves (a daunting task for first time home owners, but totally worth it)! I would try an earthy grey paint outside, some nice landscaping that you could do yourself and ditch the overhang awning. Oh, and if you are feeling adventerous, a low profile deck/stair in front will really update the look while creatng additional outdoor space! We took our "Brady Home" in the direction of earthy, architectual modern vs. the retro, kitshy modern to help with resale value if we ever want to put it on the market. Kitsh can be a detractor for most buyers so keep that in mind! Please post after pics if you take the plunge on this unique home!

Anne1009, as a former apartment dweller and more recently, home owner; I appreciate that AT has categories for people who want to peruse apartments, and people who want to peruse homes. If you are unable to find inspiration from homes; simply click on the 'Tours' pull down tab in the upper left corner of the AT homepage and stick with the apartment category.

Tranquility abounds in this home! Love it! A sense of space, peace and nature in home aesthetics clearly run in the Nakashima family!

@ people wondering about the pendant lights outdoors. They are the Progress Lighting Canister light model SKU: P5675-82. Love this tour! My house has a similar vibe and we share some of the same furnishings...but Carol's architectural details are WAAAY cooler! I live in CT and the prevalent architectural style here is Colonial, Tudor, McMansion and Raised Ranch. Closest thing we could find to interesting architecture was a 60's Contemporary.

Rit is toxic. Not good to expose your skin on for long periods of time esp. not good when mixing with the oils on your fingers. This project seems like a bad idea. If you have that much time on your hands, why not just decoupage your silverware. It seems to make just as much sense as dying your "outdated" laptop.
Dyeing with Rit dye can be one way to salvage an otherwise stained garment or to obtain fabrics or yarns of the colors you desire. Care must be taken when using Rit dye; it is a chemical and is toxic when ingested, breathed or absorbed through the skin.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!! I too stand as a wood purist who also has commented when lovely wood pieces have been painted hipster-yellow and showcased on AT. As someone who spent almost 4 months (part time project) lovingly restoring a Heywood Wakefield dresser I scored at our local Good Will for the insanely low price of 9 bucks, I understand the agony and then joy you must have felt as you painstakingly sanded the wood to its natural beauty! Bravo on a job well done!

Ahhh...this home speaks to me!! The exact look I go for (and am still srtiving to create) in my home. It is a perfect mix of ethereal, raw material (and raw woods), nature and rich textiles. So very, very well done. Bravo!!

Seems weird to me...anything overdecorated seems weird to me. I have seen people repurpose toilets into flower planters on their front lawns as well as an old brass headboard planted in a flower bed...get it...flower bed. Ugh...it's like when someone takes an old broken chair, sticks it in a corner and tries to make a vignette out of it (maybe a stuffed bear, a stack of books and an old typewriter). I guess people really like to 'decorate' their stuff.

Clutter, clutter everywhere! As a former 'collector of things' I get it...surround yourself with things you like to see. As a newfound minimalist, I can say that nothing is more liberating than freeing yourself of clutter, possessions and "things" that bog you down. I have moved four times in the past 15 years, and each time I packed up and lugged with me all of my things, I started to see them less as things and more as baggage. I had to care for them and clean/dust them. The more I had, the longer it took. Once I understood that, it became easy to shed it all! I am no longer a slave (or Curator to use AT-speak) of my things. I keep my space sparse and the chi really flows. I shall now step off my soap box. Other than that I like the lightfixture in the living room.
