I'm in FL, and something that I found that's great is lantana. There are a million varieties and I actually found one that's lightly scented. They have great, bright blossoms that are butterfly and bee friendly, AND they grow in containers well, although they will spread in a "bush-like" manner if allowed to roam in the ground. :) 5 Fragrant Plants for a Small Space |

One of the best things we did was to install (not super cheap @ $40-50) privacy sheer cling-ons in our living room where we didn't want to pay for shades or blinds. Got it at Lowe's and it goes on with a squeegee and a little soap/water primer combo. Makes such a huge difference and we still get light but there's no privacy issue! 10 Ways to Customize a Rental |

First and foremost, I would paint the top "siding" wall portion, as well as the door frame and the window frames. You could, of course, pick any color you like as long as it went well with the concrete. Then, I would actually make the flower bed a raised bed (at least a few feet high) and have either 1) regular flowers you could change seasonally OR 2) a beautiful trailing plant that could climb up the whole side. I absolutely LOATHE the idea of #3. Seriously. How the heck are you gonna clean that upholstered chest?
