Yes, in the LA area, look up Silver Lake Salvage. Pricier than Urban Ore, but less useless junk too... it is a trade off.

I've found an equal quantity of treasures and must-have junk at Urban Ore over the years, too... if only I didn't rent, I could have some serious renovation fun.

@Aulaire: I have a clear teal ball like this-- it came from my local new agey drug store in CA (they have big yoga section). Maybe look for something along those lines rather than ebay?
