LOVE!
I thought this was in the French countryside and thought 'sure with bones like that and access to fabrics and furniture like that...' but lo! you're in CA! (I'm in NY) Wow! What fabulous finds and combinations. What a great eye and sense of design you have. I really love the richness, quirkiness, yet cleanliness of this space! I have a couple of french friends whose interiors are much like this. Rich in color, playful with textiles and textures, unconventional use of materials but smart and practical - wish I had your talents! I'm moving to CA just as soon as I can!

Sorry for your break-up! I admire you for channeling all of those emotions into creating such a fantastic and clear-sighted space! You clearly have a great eye for design and beauty- I love the print in the front hall - and that you placed it there; I love the little 'montage'? of photos on the living room wall next to the fire escape and the huge photo behind the bed. I like the way the rug demarcates the bedroom space and that it's a comfy and inviting looking space too. I'd love to see more of your place - like where your guests sit and the kitchen (which looks very clean and inviting). Also I was painting a room a lighter gray and have stopped work hoping you will share those colors! Grays are challenging to get right - and you did it! good luck to you, thanks for linking to your work...

I live in a small house (1150 sf) with 3 kids so the 1 bathroom is in demand. If my daughters can shower and take care of the rest outside of the bathroom, then that's pretty cool. It's got outlets, but they need to be fed, so I guess you need an extension cord? It's not always easy to accommodate that need.

I want one! But $600 makes me think I could do this with a less expensive cart and a hung mirror in the hall. Sorry, PB, your bureau is certainly preferable and more attractive, but money is just disappearing all over the place! These girls will hopefully go to college and that needs to be funded.

What a truly gorgeous apartment! The degree to which you've thought things out is truly impressive. So smart and pretty! You have done a phenomenal job of utilizing available space and your taste is impeccable. Seems so self-evident , and repetitive of all the previous posts, that I feel silly writing it! I'm in love with your space. And that mobile IS a desirable object!

I am most curious about your kitchen. We are trying to redo ours and I wondered what material the counter is and if the bamboo is much more expensive than other woods.
Using the grain horizonatally was, like everything else, very clever. Also, is the color in the kitchen bm 'nacho?' as someone posted? The half-size fridge is the only one?

We are 5 living in 1150 sf (plus some basement space). We are two parents and 3 kids (14, 12, 9 yrs.) It works for us, but everything has to have its place. When we redo things, like giving the kids their own spaces, it's chaos since things don't have homes! Anyway, thanks for any leads. Are you still there? For what it's worth, I think (now that my kids are older) that you don't need a lot of space but you will need more than you have when she gets into elementary school. Home prices are really great right now... (I'm not a realtor!) but if you can tear yourselves away from that lovely spot you've created to do it again elsewhere I'd love to see that too!!!

We do not wear shoes in our house. Nor do guests.
We do not have a closet on the first floor (of any kind). coats are hung on hooks. We don't have a mud room or a hall in front of our door - just a small porch - I wouldn't ask someone to take their shoes off out there! Here in NY the weather is quite variable!

We also don't have a universal closet upstairs. Just personal ones (and not enough of those so they're usually pretty full creating that 'uh, where should I put them, just toss them in?' akwardness!) and anyway I'm loathe to direct my guests to my bedroom closet or drop everything to fetch their shoes to avoid it when one friend needs to leave.

Our solution is a two tiered IKEA slat rack that shoes fit in/onto. It sits underneath the coat rack just inside the front door. It has small legs so I can get under it with a swiffer. It's not beautiful or a piece of art but it is cute, keeps things tidy and my floors clean. Definitely not a catastrophe. I think the solution posted is cute too, and like that you can get under it with a mop too, and can see the point regarding finer shoes, corn pads discreetly placed on the underside of the top shelf would probably do a good job protecting them. I'm sure the vatican has a closet! I don't think I'm being lazy rather I think I'm being practical.

So true everyone! - no shoes should ever be worn in a home. However, it's not always practical to have someone take their shoes off outside of the front door. We don't keep carpets in our house due to allergies and it's always a nuisance when water from wet shoes puddles on our wood floors as the snow melts. BAD for wood floors and annoying when a nice warm socked foot steps in it. We lay down a bath mat. It's absorbent and can be washed.

Very Martha and Restoration Hardware but nicely implemented. The historic colors are tasteful but not experimental.

The dining room is fabulous but the sitting room is pedestrian and the kitchen color makes the space seem cold. The bedside lamps were a very savvy addition!

One thing noone's commented on is the continuity from room to room of the painted white furniture. I think I like it but the house as a whole loses by being one strong wall color one medium tone floor and then the white. It's almost formulaic and a bit of a turn off.
