Buy an extra charger and always keep it in your carry on, that way you never run out the door without it. I do the same thing with my toothbrush and a travel-size deodorant, and keep my travel-size liquids packed in a plastic bag so they are ready to go.

I agree with LawyerMel. Real food and booze is the only fair trade off for having to attend a baby shower...

I love this post. It is heartwarming and inspiring to read about people who are willing to open up their hearts and home to kids in need. And congrats on the little girl, she is blessed!

Sigh. I do not dream of living in a mansion, or of vacation homes all over the world, but one thing I have always pined over is an outdoor bathroom. Is it so much to ask? (Maybe if you live in Washington, DC...) Great post!

We used metal fence posts to design our open shelving in our kitchen, which was very cost efficient and gives the room a slightly contemporary vibe. And although not techinically a soup, my favorite recipe in here is the Pork Chili with Cumin Polenta. So good on a warm day and an easy crowd favorite when I entertain big groups.

Another variation is to add apples. I didn't have any bananas or berries, so in a separate pan I made caremelized apples (peeled, sliced, and cooked with a little water, butter and brown sugar). I then added those with a little fresh cream to the porridge. It was very tasty.

I live just down the street from this house and whenever I walk my dogs by, I am always trying to peek in because it is such a fabulous, unique space. Thanks for bringing this to our attention AT!

I did this on the inside of my pantry doors, but bought these containers from Container Store in stainless steel. They are magnetized on the back and hold a lot. I wrote the name of the spice with a sharpie on the plastic tops. The store also sells magnetic metal boards about 8x11" and I stuck those on the door with storng 3M double-sided stick as the base. It was SOOO easy!

africarising - the tops are 3cm, which is standard. I used Marble Systems in Fairfax, VA, which I think has the best marble selection in the DC area. And I should know - I visited about 5 different places... The marble, for me, was the focal point of the kitchen and I was very particular about the slab. I would suggest looking at a number of different places before picking the slab you want becasue there is a lot of poor quality (veiny) carrara out there right now. Holdfast has a guy that just installs countertops (and he honed it for us). He got us a discount on the retail price and did a very nice job - that it one of my favorite things about our kitchen.

91styale - The racks were in our kitchen when we moved in and I don't know where they are from, but they look a lot like this: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=pot racks&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&oe=utf8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=7420629740243972947&ei=DEUFTJbwMYKClAfAxYHXBg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=image&resnum=6&ved=0CFQQ8gIwBQ#.

funkisockmunki - Re: the Blomberg fridge, we actually love this fride and think the quality is great. It is absolutely silent and the energy efficiency seems to be as good if not better than the Liebherr. Although the Liebherr may be the Porsche of fridges, I think Blomberg is a great alternative.

Thanks for all the comments and votes, everyone! We cook a lot in our house and are glad to see that shows through!

ParkRoadFolks - Marble tops are not for everyone. While we have sealed them and therefore have no trouble with staining, they are easily etched (even if you take care not to put any acidic products directly on them). The etching is not as noticeable if you hone the marble and you can always hone it every few years to return it to its original state. We like the look so much and the little imperfections don't bother us, so I was very confident in our choice, but I can see how they would not be durable enough for most people.

lucica - it is a knife strip from Ikea and is drilled, but drilled into the grout, not the tile itself.

baurameen - we used Holdfast LLC (http://www.holdfastdc.com/) and highly recommend them. And two of the guys that worked on our kitchen just started their own company called Ancora Contracting (no website yet, but can be reached at ancoracontracting@gmail.com) - they were terrific as well. Both companies do great work and are budget friendly ;-)

yardie - the suspension rods are actually stainless steel fence posts (home depot) and the horizonal bars are long cabinet pulls from ikea. We didn't want to spend a fortune on this shelving unit, so those items and some planks of wood and paint did the trick within our budget.
