Ooh, I am now coveting the above mentioned mesh TSA-approved toiletry case... going to do a Google stalk over the weekend.

We have the Ikea one, with a normal round paper shade. No problems attaching it. I agree that it casts beautiful light -- diffuse but low and intimate, just what you want in your living room at night. The black arm and cord don't bother me, as I barely notice them anymore!

I like the suggestion of Room 2 being dining/office/closet. Put a large table running lengthwise that doubles as a dining table and work area. Add a console or shelves to the opposite wall for your work supplies, etc. Keep the closet as your closet (who says it has to be in the bedroom!)

Also, has anyone mentioned? Do away with the doors in your public spaces, and you won't have to worry about the extra floor space taken up by them swinging.

My most brilliant curtain idea ever? Ikea's Deka wire and curtain clips, with twin flat sheets clipped on. Really, you could use any fabric, but sheets are already hemmed and guaranteed washable, for getting rid of the dirty that always migrates in during the summers. You can find sheets in just about any solid color, though I might suggest brightening your room with a nice clean white! That's what we have up right now, in the form of Ikeas cheapest crummiest sheets. To sleep on, they would be quite coarse, but as curtains the texture looks almost linen like.

No tv in the bedroom now... thought bringing computers/iphones into bed seems to create just as many of the problems mentioned above!

Actually, though, I have considered switching the tv out of the public space and into the bedroom after we have kids, as a way to keep the tv away from them. No tv is not an option due to my sports fanatic hubby, but I do like the idea of making regular tv viewing an "adult" thing that is regulated to the bedroom like so many other adult things.

For our annual holiday party, where guest drink out of disposable cane glasses anyway, I fill all our wine glasses with pinecones and a few strands of interspersed tinsel and spread them throughout the house. So pretty!
