Creepy!...especially if you've seen the movie about the psycho who was killing people who represented the seven deadly sins! It's not a place I'd want to stay! The Sinfully Decorated Bedrooms of the Vice Versa Hotel Paris |

If you look at these pics, you can see that wherever the strong color stops in height, that is the perceived ceiling height. I have had a couple of decorating problems and these pics help solve it for me. I couldn't decide if I should go with patterned (love this idea) or solid curtains. I can see that as long as the print is not a strong contrasting color, a long sheath will make the statement I want. I needed something to make the room feel less crowded and busy. Floor to ceiling curtains will help draw the eye away from all the other fussy stuff (books, musical instruments...). Plus the up-side of curtains like this is even if you can't find the upholstery color you want without spending a rich man's fortune, you can pull in your favorite color without making a devastating financial decision. Love these pics....love this idea! Such a perfect solution for so many decorating challenges! Simple Solid Color Curtains Set the Stage |

I consider myself a 'maximalist' but now after seeing your home I think I'm not lol! I do not feel quite so guilty now about my collecting and I thank you for a look inside your interesting home. I never thought I'd say 'too much is too much' but here it is for me. I would LOVE to visit, but couldn't live here, and so I am really grateful to you for creating one of the memorable moments in my life when my taste and decorating style was significantly refined.....completely sincere here when I say Thank you very much! BTW, though your taste is different than mine, I consider your taste to be artistically amazing and not gaudy. Thanks for the inspiration! JoAnn & Dan's Creatively Collected Home House Tour |

in....out....who cares? Unless I am going to try to resell my stuff soon...but I'm not. I decorate for me. I love capitalism, but really, what's "In" can often be just another way of saying "this is the newest product I am trying to sell you." I found out a few years back that I am actually part French, and maybe that explains my idea of mixing and matching exactly what I want with a view towards hanging on to those great family pass downs and making them work in my design scheme. If ultra modern is your thing (it;s not mine), then who cares if it is going out?! ...but, this was entertaining. What's In? What's Out? Apartment Therapy & People Stylewatch |

When I decided to purchase red bubbleware instead of china the dishes collecting began. I've got enough now with that and red cape cod (the old Avon stuff), and some red ruby. I've also added Portmerion - Botanica Garden, and some mild glass. Oh and did I forget to mention some place settings of a cool old English pattern? Well I don't buy much anymore, but would add a few pieces if I found them. I collect Nancy Drew books for myself and my daughters. I have collected a few things that reminded me of my parents; ie: a lunch box like my Dad's, a Brownie camera like my mom's...etc. I have also kept my kids dance shoes as they have grown.... I guess I am an incurable collector, but some of my stuff looks great and some is waiting to look great, but hey, on to the next good deal! LOL What Do You Indulge in Collecting? |

I value seeing other people's places for inspiration, to see how I would like to live...and seeing this place reminds me one more time why I am not a minimalist...boring! but since it is so different than my tastes, interesting. I admire Doug's vision and work ethic, I find his taste, well, just boring. Doug's Glam Triplex in Union Square House Tour |

so rockin' cool! My bed is huge and that means that an ordinary night stand won't work. I could use these legs for that. To make, place a piece of plywood on top of the legs, secure, and then place a gently used retro suitcase on top.... or how about replacing a towel bar with these; use the old parts that hang on the wall and mount the legs to them. Spray painting the old parts with a wild color would be even cooler....or how about an over the door rack.....or these look like they would work for plant supports...or turn them upside down and screw to a piece of plywood painted some bright color. Make a canvas bag to fit over the top and viola' - a laundry basket. Mount wheels on the bottom for mobility (or just plain good looks!).... Ideas for Using Salvaged Hairpin Legs? Good Questions |

I would have loved this as a kid. I lived in a small house and it seemed that everywhere I tried to put my blanket tent was in my Mom's way and it soon quickly came down. You could set this tent up anywhere and it's so portable. I think this is a fab idea but would also like to see a teepee....and if you had several - viola! a tent mansion!!! Some great ideas here but I agree with the other comments...a little over the top. It seems to me that the best design in large public spaces is to go big with everything. In hotels where they have little things (ie. the candles, etc) sitting around, you have to assume that this hotel is so ritzy that they can afford to have their little stuff stolen...it just doesn't read 'homey'.... but I think the worst thing here is the Quality Inn logo on the mirror! However, I like the world traveled look, and the bright colors and even some of the glitz. The Design Rebranding of a Hotel Chain |

...so I'm not a mid-century fan at all but this place is why I regularily haunt AT...Love all the interesting objects to look at, and these two are fabulous at "propping" it. That is a real gift; to be able to take an eclectic collection and pull it all together without it looking trashy. LOVE your place guys! RJ & Francis' East/West Coast Loft House Tour |

At first glance I thought "so cool" and then I read the comments so I took a longer look and here's my take: The couch is neutral and is a great backdrop for the rockin' colors of the pillows which tie in with the bright lime yellow chair. Though the rug is not in the ballpark color-wise it works because the pattern is a different scale (I read here on AT that you should do three size patterns; large, med. and small, so this rug is the medium). The silver poufs are ok because they make the 3rd flash of bright color (ya know...better decorating uses uneven numbers of things...I think you can stretch that to include color too, if it works). The drapes are the LARGE pattern and quite obnoxious but it works because the rug balances them. However I agree that the wall color is wrong. It's wrong because it flows into the drapes and makes them the focal point and that works together to pull the pattern color of the rug into more emphasis. If you put those brights into the room, then those have to be the room's statement, so lighten up the wall color to read more like a neutral like the couch and then I think it's a vivid but balanced room. I'm cool with tons of color...that's me...but my husband is seriously color-blind which means that what is pulse sensating to me is barf producing to him...thus I say yeh, you should consider other people's tastes in a neighborhood. Be creative, bright, happy, etc. but save the brash, bold, shocking for the interior because other people don't have to live there. I like creative but considerate is better to live with....and btw, our Walmart painted a bright yellow in their grocery section and I'm not sure why but it seriously produces a physical sensation in me...it's bad! Really makes my stomach turn! Weird huh?! I don't look at it if at all possible...However all that said, Vive la colour!!!! Neighborhood Etiquette: When Personal Style Becomes Public |

I love patina on almost everything. In our new kitchen we installed stainless steel counter top on each side of the cooktop...great for hot pans! The island has stainless on one side and 2 foot wide butcher block on the other. We went with maple but my friend did cherry and I like the look of hers much better. My butcher block is starting to gain patina...nice. Then for the rest of the kitchen we used square 12" marble tiles. I will have to admit that it is hard to watch the marble patina. I'm sure after we get everything done (we built our house ourselves) the patina look will come together and I would choose it again, but it is at this point, a work in progress. Forgot to mention that the counter edging is ceramic chair rail tile. It all presents as an antique look and considering we only spent a thousand dollars for a 20 x 12 kitchen, I am quite happy. Now just to be patient for the patina to age....sigh Kitchen Countertop Preference: Get Better with Age or Stay Looking Brand New? |
