Gastropub.

Setting aside for a moment that the word reads and sounds like something you don't want happening to your lower intestines, the bigger issue is that it's increasingly being used incorrectly by places that have neither fine beer or food, by any stretch of the imagination.

@icanmakeit - Because of course that'll be the one time corporate greedmonsters don't go with cost savings over customer convenience? Get real.

I live in a very touristy part of San Francisco, and if you know anything about San Francisco, you know that we love to screw our tourists any way we can, and especially in restaurants. Therefore, my closest Safeway is always full of visitors stocking up on supplies they can stuff into the minibar fridge, or getting things from the deli, at more reasonable prices.

Unfortunately, our beloved tourists appear to be somewhat overwhelmed by their SF experience and have forgotten how supermarkets work. I seek out lines that look like they're populated with locals -- really, anyone who looks like they're doing a heavy weekly shop -- because sure enough every single person in the express lane will have some sort of special circumstance or language barrier that needs to be overcome so they can buy their Smart Water.

If you're going to drop by to be sanctimony, you can usually avoid the next comment smacking you around for acting as such by actually recommending one or two of those brews you hold in such high esteem, you tedious pedant.

My apartment is the size of a postage stamp, so I have it on top of the fridge. The fridge is waist height, so this works out well.

Oh dear. I like some of the elements, but when put all together it's a bit too cartoonish for me.

Your friendly regional Costco should sell them by the gross.

Deal-breakers:

- Considerable distance from public transit (not so much of a problem in SF);

- Small-time landlords. Maybe I've had really bad luck, but all the individual owner-operated places I've lived at have had landlords who were slightly to seriously unbalanced. The corporate-run buildings may lack some soul, but they also lack some crazy -- and things actually get repaired when they break.

- Children. No, I don't hate them, and families have to live somewhere in this obscenely priced city. But I've lived in apartment buildings where there have been children, who are bored out of their minds and have nothing better to do. I'd rather deal with a caterwauling drunk on the sidewalk.

Theoj hits the nail squarely on the head: This area has been an improving neighborhood for decades, but it didn't make the news until the rich white people started moving in. This is what has irritated me about the gradual gentrification of this part of San Francisco, the problems these places have faced for years and years were met with no concern or a wall of indifference from our city leaders. Oh, but they were great for a photo op and a speech about how they all planned to Do Something... just right after they were re-elected. But anyway, all of a sudden now that the rich Caucasians have moved in, things are actually changing in these neighborhoods. The police who used to say "we can't do anything!" suddenly show up within seconds rather than minutes.

Oh well! If you can get rid of the all the colored people who look and speak differently than you by simply saying they're not allowed, just price 'em out of the neighborhood and Mission Accomplished!

Good for them. I hope I have managed my finances well enough near the end of my life to be in a similar position.

peggy, unfortunately your Sears experience is very typical. It's no longer a brand name -- it's a warning label.

It looks cool, but in practice I'm thinking lots of sprained and broken ankles would be in the owner's future.

That's adorable. It would probably last all of five minutes when matched up against San Francisco's army of roving addict zombie thieves, but it would certainly be adorable for those five minutes.

How do sites like Consumerist handle the problem? Well, from being a regular reader there, I can report the following observations:

They name the companies threatening legal action.
They name the lawyers making the threats.
They publish the threatening letters from the lawyers or company reps.
They publish their own legal counsel's snarky rejoinder.
We all have a merry time in the comments section chortling about it.

Now, do you have actual lawsuits on your hands, or do you just have a bunch of overpaid bloviators threatening such?

I really want to like it. I like the shape of it, the suggestion of a beanbag without the, erm, beans. But the holes and the color chosen make it simply revolting.
