What if you turned the bookshelf/desk so it was perpendicular to the window? Then you could put a sofa or something up against the bookcase part and use it as a room divider of sorts. Without a better idea of the size of the room and where the doorways are, I'm having trouble with brilliant ideas though.... What to Do With This Awkward Room? You can reface the cabinets and just replace the doors with something more current. It's a fraction the cost of replacing the entire cabinet. If your wood is in good shape, for heaven's sake don't paint it! I like the idea of the wallpaper riser, although I'm not crazy about any of the choices depicted.
