OK, I answered my own question (above). If you want a grease pencil, I would suggest tracking down the "sharpie" brand from a store where grease pencils circulate...I purchased one from an art store rather than the off-brand at my hardware store, and it writes quite well.

I was very excited about using a grease pencil to mark on canning jars and lids (I have very vague memories of using them in science lab in school), but I can't seem to get them to write a dark line - the words are BARELY legible - nothing like your label in the photo above. I have to press very hard to get even the lightest mark.

Do you think I bought an old one or a bad brand on accident? Or is there a trick to this?

I make a simpler version of parsley pesto - no measuring, just parsley, walnuts, parm, and olive oil - and I've grown prefer it to the average basil pesto. It just has a fresh taste and a simplicity that I love. Now...I do think that the BEST basil pesto with the highest quality ingredients would be better than the BEST parley pesto, but for a typical weeknight and budget? I'll take parsley any day.

I should just buckle down and do this! I was considering a similar project this January, but I just love grocery shopping so much....

Still, my cupboards are definitely overstuffed and there are some whole dried mung beans that have been sitting around FOREVER. Anyone have ideas for mung beans? I don't know why I own them, but they are too pretty to go to waste.

I also have too many prepared sauces/condiments/seasoning packets - I live near an ethnic market and I will often pick up things on a whim. But when I actually get around to cooking dinner, I rarely rely on a packaged sauce, and fall back to my large spice collection and staples like soy, mirin, etc. Hmmmm.

Anyway, you've inspired me! I'll try to clear out my pantry, too!

I LOVE mine, and I read the comments to get new ideas on how to use it even more!

Looks like the people who don't see the point to an immersion blender are also people who have a food processor and a blender. I can see how you wouldn't want to buy something that duplicates those appliances. However, I don't have an electric mixer or a blender and my mini food processor is on the fritz, so I use my immersion blender for everything now (chopping, blending, whisking).

So don't assume those of us with immersion blenders are buying unnecessary gadgets! Quite the contrary!

Wow, lots of folks didn't like this tip, but I think this is a great idea! I actually have a heck of a time cleaning my microplane - when I run it under water, a lot of the zest tends to bunch up on the sides and stick. I'll try it!

I basically agree with what Sian posted - sounds like we have similar lifestyles.

The problem with questions like this is that they seem to assume "green" is an end state - that there is some point at which you reach "green" - whereas we should be continually re-evaluating our choices and make the best choices we can based on known evidence and our cultural and geographic situtations.

Can you be "greener" by giving up meat? I think so, yes, but the benefits become less the closer you get to veganism (i.e., a family who goes from eating meat 5 days a week to 3 days a week makes a much bigger green move than a family who eat meat once a month and cuts that out entirely out of guilt).

I think you can also have a steak every once and a while and choose not to drive as a sort of "priority trade-off", which is what I do.
